Blood Donations Surge 2% in Just 9 Months: A Lifesaving Trend!

Blood donation in Iran has seen a notable increase, with a rise of over two percent in the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year, which commenced on March 20, 2024. This surge reflects the growing awareness and commitment of the Iranian population towards altruistic health initiatives. According to Bashir Haji-Beigi, the spokesperson for the Blood Transfusion Organization, a remarkable total of 1,793,126 blood units were donated during this period.

Haji-Beigi highlighted that the provinces with the most significant growth in blood donations included:

• Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad: over 25 percent increase
• Sistan–Baluchestan: more than 15 percent increase
• Alborz: over 9 percent increase

Furthermore, he noted that the continuous blood donation growth rate in the country has escalated to over 56 percent. The provinces leading in this category were:

• Semnan: approximately 69 percent
• Yazd: about 68 percent
• Golestan: nearly 66 percent

When discussing the participation of women in blood donation, Haji-Beigi mentioned that their contribution currently stands at 4.5 percent of total donations. The provinces with the highest female participation in blood donation were:

• North Khorasan and Lorestan: over 8 percent
• Sistan-Baluchestan: over 7 percent

Tehran province accounted for more than 16 percent of the total blood donations during the same period, showcasing the capital’s vital role in supporting the national blood supply.

Yearly Overview of Blood Donations

In the previous Iranian calendar year (March 2023 – March 2024), a total of 2,327,997 Iranians participated in blood donation, reflecting an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. Key contributors included:

• Tehran: accounted for more than 16 percent of the total donations
• Fars: contributed over 7 percent

During the last year, the most significant growth in blood donation was recorded in:

• Lorestan: 22 percent increase
• North Khorasan: 16 percent increase
• Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad: approximately 13 percent increase

The overall blood donation rate in the country reached over 54 percent, with provinces leading the charge including:

• Semnan: 69 percent
• Yazd: 64 percent
• Qom: 63 percent

Women’s share of blood donations rose to 4 percent, with a total of 102,907 women participating, marking an increase from the previous year. Encouragingly, there is a growing expectation for women to engage more actively in blood donation campaigns.

The regions with the highest contribution by women included:

• Lorestan: 9 percent
• North Khorasan: almost 8 percent
• Sistan-Baluchestan: over 7 percent

In terms of overall participation, the blood donation rate reached 27 per thousand people, with the highest rates recorded in:

• Mazandaran: over 40,000 people donating blood
• Semnan: over 39,000 donors
• Yazd: ranked second and third in contributions
