Iran Condemns U.S. ‘Humiliating’ Treatment of Migrants as ‘Unacceptable’

The treatment of migrants, particularly Iranian nationals, by the U.S. administration has recently come under fire. The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed strong condemnation of these actions, labeling them as both humiliating and unjustifiable in light of human rights standards.

Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson, stated on Saturday that the Iranian Foreign Ministry is committed to advocating for the rights of its citizens. He elaborated on the ministry’s proactive measures to support Iranian nationals who have been expelled from the United States. Here are the key points he addressed:

  • Support Initiatives: The Foreign Ministry has issued directives to Iran’s Interest Section in Washington DC, as well as diplomatic and consular missions across South America, to assist Iranian nationals facing deportation.
  • Right to Return: Baghaei emphasized that Iran is the homeland for all Iranians, affirming that compatriots are welcome to return freely.
  • Facilitating Returns: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to help resolve any issues related to the return process for expelled Iranian nationals.

Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted the recent actions of the U.S. administration, which has intensified the deportation of “undocumented” migrants as part of President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies since he began his second term on January 20.

On a notable occasion, 119 immigrants from various Asian countries—including Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Turkiye, Pakistan, and China—were transported from the U.S. to Panama aboard a military aircraft. This action was part of a broader pattern, with similar deportations occurring from countries like Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil. During these operations, deportees were often seen handcuffed and shackled, prompting criticism from destination countries regarding the treatment of these individuals as criminals.
