Iran’s Vatican Embassy Extends Warm Congratulations on New Pope’s Election
In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, the Iranian Embassy to the Holy See has extended its warm congratulations on its X account, celebrating the appointment of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new Pope and Leader of the universal Catholic Church. This significant transition marks a new chapter in the Church’s journey, and the embassy conveys its heartfelt wishes to all faithful members of the Catholic community.
The embassy also expressed its aspirations for this new pontificate, emphasizing hope for:
- Fostering dialogue and understanding among religions.
- Promoting peace and social justice.
- Working towards the eradication of oppression and injustice globally.
On Thursday, following two days of discussions and voting among the cardinals, Cardinal Prevost was elected as the successor to the late Pope Francis. The newly appointed Pope, named Leo XIV, is 69 years old and hails from Chicago, Illinois. Notably, he is the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
Cardinal Prevost has a rich history of service in Latin America, dedicating a decade to the community in Trujillo, Peru. Most recently, he served as the bishop in Chiclayo from 2014 until 2023.
The previous Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, widely known as Pope Francis, passed away at the age of 88 due to complications from a stroke, following a recent recovery from pneumonia. This transition in leadership brings both challenges and opportunities for the Catholic Church as it moves forward under Pope Leo XIV.
