Mohammad Binava, the Deputy Head of Kashan’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department, has emphasized the critical need to bolster the production infrastructure within Kashan. He highlighted the region’s historical significance and economic potential tied to its traditional textile art, particularly noting the ancient weaving practices in the Sialk area, which archaeological evidence suggests dates back to around 4200 BC.
“The discovery of artifacts, including knife handles adorned with fabric patterns and various weaving tools in the Sialk Hills, provides clear evidence that the inhabitants of this area have been proficient in weaving techniques for millennia,” Binava explained. This historical context not only affirms Kashan’s illustrious past but also secures its status among the oldest textile centers globally.
Kashan has maintained its reputation as a textile hub throughout history, especially during the post-Islamic era. One of the standout techniques from this region is Zari weaving, renowned as one of the most luxurious branches of textile craftsmanship.
