Iranian Schoolchildren Shine at International Mathematics Olympiad: A Triumph in Education

In a remarkable display of talent at the second International Mathematics Olympiad for high school students in Turkmenistan, Iranian students secured an impressive total of seven bronze medals. This event, aimed at fostering international scientific cooperation among young mathematicians, took place from April 21 to 26, hosted by the Ashgabat Specialized General Education School.

More than 230 gifted students from 15 countries participated in this prestigious competition, including Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Armenia, Bulgaria, Nepal, China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Qatar, and Turkmenistan. Representing Iran were thirty-one students from North Khorasan, who showcased their mathematical prowess on an international stage.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, this Olympiad is designed to enhance peace and friendly relations among nations while promoting international collaboration in education and science.

Recent Achievements in Mathematics Competitions

In addition to the International Mathematics Olympiad, Iranian students have showcased their remarkable skills in other international contests. At the Turkic International Mathematics Olympiad (TIMO), held from April 17 to 22 in Antalya, Iranian students earned two silver and two bronze medals, achieving an impressive fourth-place ranking.

TIMO is an inclusive international competition open to students from grades 3 to 12, consisting of two rounds: preliminary and global. In the preliminary round, more than 27,350 students from 35 countries participated online in December. This was followed by an offline qualifying exam featuring 25 multiple-choice questions that students had to complete in 60 minutes.

The Global round saw 1,500 selected participants compete in a paper-based format. Among the notable achievements:

  • Parnian Heydarian and Anusha Abdi received silver medals and were honored with world star awards.
  • Fatemeh Mazini and Ava Dejagah also won bronze medals.

Robotics and Science Fair Success

In November 2024, students from the Iran University of Science and Technology clinched first place at the Eurasia Federation of International RoboSports Association (FIRA) Open competition. This event took place from November 6 to 9 in Van, Turkey, and saw participation from 130 teams across eight countries.

The Iranian team, consisting of:

made waves by ranking first in innovation and entrepreneurship for their groundbreaking design of ‘infrasight drones’.

Moreover, Iran achieved remarkable success at the International Science and Invention Fair (ISIF) 2024, held in Indonesia from November 5 to 10, where they secured five gold medals and two special awards. This competition featured 1,980 teams from 24 countries competing in eight diverse fields, including:

  • Technical Engineering
  • Chemistry and Nanotechnology
  • Biotechnology and Environment
  • Energy Engineering
  • Physics and Astronomy
  • Artificial Intelligence and Technology
  • Social Sciences
  • Education and Educational Technologies

A total of 18 students from Iran participated in the 47th WorldSkills Competition, achieving a noteworthy tally of 9 medals, which included a silver medal and several medallions for excellence.

These recent achievements highlight the exceptional capabilities and dedication of Iranian students in the fields of mathematics, robotics, and science, paving the way for future endeavors in international competitions.

  • Rainfall Plummets: A 42% Decline Shakes Weather Patterns

    Iran’s rainfall from September 23, 2024, to February 28, 2025, totaled only 78.8 mm, a 42.9% decline from the long-term average of 137.9 mm, highlighting severe water scarcity issues. Recent data shows just 3 mm of rain in the last week, a 57.4% decrease compared to the average. Winter rainfall is 44.9 mm, 43% less than normal. Key assistance included staple food baskets, cash transfers—IRR 5 million for male-headed households and IRR 6 million for female-headed ones—and additional cash for livelihoods. WFP also addressed specific dietary needs, aiding 52 celiac patients and 388 refugees with disabilities. Economic resilience initiatives supported 24 projects benefiting 300 refugees.
