In a related development, Iran is actively seeking to attract foreign investment in its pharmaceutical industry. Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi announced this initiative in October, emphasizing Iran’s readiness to provide the necessary infrastructure and a large market for potential investors.

During a conference titled ‘Health Investment: A Bridge for Regional Prosperity,’ which coincided with the eighth edition of the Global Health Exhibition held from October 27 to 30 at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center in Saudi Arabia, Zafarqandi outlined Iran’s strengths in the pharmaceutical sector.

He stated, “Today, Iran is a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in the region, capable of meeting a significant portion of its needs through domestic production, including generic drugs and biotechnology products.” Zafarqandi highlighted several key features of Iran’s health products:

  • High production capacity.
  • Innovative leadership in cell therapies and biopharmaceuticals.
  • Expert human resources.
  • Adherence to global quality standards.
  • Competitive pricing.

The health minister further emphasized the goal of enhancing collaboration through establishing joint ventures in research, development, and production. He expressed a desire to share technology in complex generic drugs and biopharmaceuticals, as well as to develop a resilient regional supply chain for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

“Generic drugs are those that are biologically identical to brand-name drugs but are marketed under their chemical or generic names,” Zafarqandi explained. He underscored the significance of strengthening ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, stating, “Let’s utilize the two countries’ scientific capabilities, financial resources, and prospects to transform into a regional power in the health field, ensuring a healthier future for our people.”

The IRAN LAB EXPO and the initiatives in the pharmaceutical sector highlight Iran’s commitment to advancing its industrial capabilities and fostering international collaborations. By showcasing local innovations and seeking partnerships, Iran aims to position itself as a key player in the regional market for laboratory and pharmaceutical products.
