Celebrate World Humanitarian Day: A Global Call for Unity and Solidarity Among Nations!

World Humanitarian Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of humanitarian organizations in alleviating human suffering. This day is a symbol of solidarity and sacrifice among nations, and it encourages a collective responsibility to address humanitarian crises globally. Razieh Alishvandi, the director of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), expressed these sentiments during a recent gathering commemorating this significant day.

Every year on August 19, World Humanitarian Day is celebrated, providing an opportunity to honor the unwavering commitment of aid workers and volunteers around the world. Alishvandi emphasized, “It is a day to honor aid workers and volunteers. It is also a reminder of the shared responsibility of all nations in the face of humanitarian crises. Any humanitarian movement will serve as a bridge to promote peace and solidarity across the world,” as reported by Mojnews.

In her address, Alishvandi elaborated on the extensive services provided by the IRCS. She highlighted the organization’s role as more than just a relief agency, stating, “The efforts of the Iranian Red Crescent Society are not limited to relief services. It plays a significant role in humanitarian diplomacy in the region and the globe.”

Alishvandi continued to stress the IRCS’s commitment to humanitarian relief, asserting, “From active presence/participation in addressing natural disasters in the region to providing aid to the oppressed people of Gaza and Lebanon, the Iranian Red Crescent Society has always strived to keep the flag of humanity flying high in the international arena.”

Honoring the Courage of IRCS Workers

On August 18, the IFRC released a statement honoring the courageous efforts of IRCS aid workers during the recent 12-day war. The theme for this year’s World Humanitarian Day, #ActforHumanity, reflects the dedication and bravery displayed by humanitarian workers like Morteza Zakeri, who have put their lives on the line to save others.

During a harrowing night in Tehran, Zakeri, head of a relief and rescue team, was dispatched to a residential area affected by airstrikes. Upon arrival, he encountered a scene of chaos and destruction: “There was no time to pause,” he recalls. “We began clearing debris immediately. The screams of trapped families pushed us to move faster, despite the constant risk of further collapse.”

In the midst of this turmoil, Zakeri found purpose and pride in his team’s resilience. He stated, “It’s not just duty anymore. It’s love. We stand by our people until the very end.”

On this World Humanitarian Day, we unite globally under the banner of #ActforHumanity to honor the courage of those who rush towards danger to save lives, often at great personal risk. This day also calls for a renewed commitment to protect the rights of humanitarian workers and emergency responders.

Tragic Losses and Ongoing Commitment

Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 50 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and workers have tragically lost their lives while serving in the field. Among these, 18 fatalities have occurred in 2025 alone. Each of these individuals operated under the protective emblems of the Red Cross, Red Crescent, or Red Crystal, which are designed to ensure their safety under international humanitarian law.

Among the fallen were five dedicated members of the Iranian Red Crescent Society: Mojtaba Maleki, Amir Hassan Jamshidpour, Mehdi Zartaji Saray, Yaser Zivari, and Seyyed Ali Akbar Mir Mohammadi. These volunteers and staff displayed extraordinary bravery during a deadly escalation of violence in June 2025. Some made the ultimate sacrifice, while others survived but carry the emotional and physical scars of their experiences.

As we reflect on the significance of World Humanitarian Day, it becomes clear that the commitment of humanitarian workers is crucial. Their bravery not only saves lives but also inspires others to contribute to the cause of humanity. It reminds us all of our shared responsibility to support those in need, ensuring that the principles of humanity, impartiality, and neutrality are upheld worldwide.

As we commemorate this day, let us pledge to recognize and protect humanitarian workers, enabling them to continue their life-saving missions without fear.
