Simaei-Sarraf noted the importance of university collaboration in fostering knowledge transfer and technology advancement. He stated, “Iran is ready to share expertise with Iraq in different fields including the expansion of science and technology parks, development of research infrastructure, as well as professors and students’ exchange.”

This meeting took place as Simaei-Sarraf, along with a delegation, visited the city of Karbala to participate in the second Iran-Iraq Science Week, running from January 18-20. This event aims to strengthen scientific, academic, and technological relationships between the two countries, bringing together representatives from over 60 top universities.

The objectives of the Iran-Iraq Science Week include:

  • Enhancing scientific and technological relations.
  • Providing a platform for expertise sharing.
  • Showcasing modern scientific and technological achievements.
  • Setting the stage for new partnerships in various technical fields.

According to Gholam-Reza Abazari, Iran’s cultural attaché in Iraq, the inaugural Iran-Iraq Science Week held in Mashhad from October 9 to 12 resulted in several memorandums of understanding. These agreements significantly expanded scientific relations and opened avenues for further operational cooperation in numerous domains.

Abazari pointed out that the significance of this event goes beyond merely exchanging knowledge. It also fosters communication among scientific elites, promotes joint technology development, and strengthens academic infrastructure. He remarked, “Iran-Iraq Science Week is beyond a scientific event; it is a key point in strengthening scientific diplomacy and developing strategic links for a brighter future.”

To facilitate these goals, a coordination meeting has already taken place with officials from both countries, discussing program details and strategies to achieve joint scientific and research objectives.

During the first Science Week, which spanned five days, several memorandums of understanding were finalized to:

  1. Expand scientific and technological relations.
  2. Implement joint research projects.
  3. Develop collaborations between scientific and research centers.

These agreements encompass a range of cooperation initiatives, such as:

  • Research opportunities for graduates.
  • Joint supervision and development of post-doctoral pathways.
  • Student exchanges between universities.
  • Mutual fellowships in various specializations, including cultural, artistic, and sports programs.
  • Joint research projects and utilization of laboratory services and logistical support at both countries’ universities.

The memorandums also include provisions for scientific cooperation in training and the exchange of academic consultations related to curricula and courses. Additionally, it was agreed to establish a committee from both parties to coordinate, monitor, and facilitate implementation procedures.

Through these initiatives, both Iraq and Iran aim to bolster their academic and scientific infrastructure, paving the way for a collaborative future in education and research.
