Iran Champions Stability and Unified Governance in Sudan, Says Parliament Speaker
In recent developments, Iran’s Parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, emphasized the Islamic Republic’s commitment to supporting the establishment of stability in Sudan. This commitment includes the formation of a “unified governance” structure that ensures the country’s territorial integrity.
During a meeting held in Tehran on Monday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf Ahmed Al-Sharif, Qalibaf reiterated Iran’s dedication to:
- Stability in Sudan
- Unified governance for effective leadership
- Territorial integrity to maintain national unity
Expressing optimism, Qalibaf stated his hope that these objectives would be realized soon. However, he also cautioned that adversaries would consistently devise “new plots” aimed at undermining peace in Sudan. He stressed the importance of “necessary planning” to counter these threats, asserting, “We should know, first and foremost, that the enemy of the Islamic nations and countries in the region is the Zionist regime.”
Sudan has faced a devastating conflict for the past two years, resulting in:
- Hundreds of thousands of casualties
- Millions of individuals displaced from their homes
Qalibaf expressed Iran’s eagerness to enhance political relations with Sudan while also focusing on economic and trade partnerships. He mentioned that the Iranian Parliament, particularly the Iran-Sudan Parliamentary Friendship Group, is prepared to foster relations with the Sudanese Parliament once stability is reestablished in the region.
In response, Ahmed Al-Sharif conveyed Sudan’s gratitude for Iran’s support regarding stability and unity in his country. He indicated Sudan’s readiness to build effective parliamentary connections with Iran after establishing the new Sudanese Parliament. Furthermore, he expressed hope for Iran’s role in the reconstruction efforts in Sudan.
Notably, Iran and Sudan agreed to restore their diplomatic relations in late 2023 after a seven-year hiatus, signaling a potential new chapter in their bilateral ties.
