London Embassy Dismisses Telegraph’s ‘Absurd’ Claims on Iran’s Nuclear Program

The Iranian Embassy in London has firmly defended the peaceful intentions behind the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, countering recent allegations made by the British daily Telegraph. These claims suggested that Iran is secretly pursuing nuclear weapons, a narrative that the embassy categorically rejects.

Over the past few weeks, the Telegraph has published multiple reports, including one on Saturday that suggested Iranian military leaders had requested that Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei revoke his fatwa prohibiting the use of nuclear weapons. In response to these claims, the Iranian Embassy issued a statement on Sunday via its social media platform.

The embassy’s post stated:

“The Telegraph has turned itself into an apparatus for a malign disinformation campaign against Iran. We reject all the claims and accusations it has disseminated on Iran’s nuclear programme throughout the past month, including the one published yesterday which is truly beyond absurdity.”

Furthermore, the embassy emphasized that:

  • Iran’s nuclear program is “absolutely peaceful.”
  • It aligns with the country’s “national plan for scientific, technological, and industrial development.”
  • Iran’s religious beliefs and national values prohibit the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

The diplomatic mission urged the Telegraph to cease its dissemination of misinformation and to focus on the genuine threats posed by other nations, particularly Israel. They stated:

“WMDs, in particular nuclear weapons, have no place in our defense doctrine nor are they allowed under our religious beliefs and national values. Please stop spreading lies and smokescreening the real and imminent threat to world peace, i.e., Israel’s nuclear arsenal, militancy, and lawless behaviour.”

This ongoing exchange highlights the tensions surrounding nuclear discourse in the region, as the Iranian Embassy remains steadfast in its position on the peaceful nature of its nuclear ambitions.
