Tragic Toll: Over 210 Journalists in Gaza Killed Amid Israeli Conflict
In a tragic event that underscores the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones, another journalist has died following an Israeli attack on a media tent in Gaza. Ahmed Mansour succumbed to severe injuries inflicted by an Israeli airstrike near the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. This incident highlights the ongoing risks that media personnel encounter while reporting in volatile environments.
Mansour, a dedicated father of two, suffered critical burns during the attack and was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away shortly thereafter. The airstrike occurred on Monday and also resulted in the deaths of fellow journalists Hilmi al-Faqawi and Youssef al-Khzandar, with several others sustaining injuries.
The strike ignited a catastrophic fire within the media camp, leading to harrowing scenes as journalists found themselves engulfed in flames. Witnesses recounted the chaos as locals attempted to extinguish the blaze while some journalists remained trapped. A viral video captured the terrifying moment that Mansour was seen burning amidst the inferno. Freelance photographer Abed Shaat shared his experience with Al Jazeera, stating:
“I started taking pictures from a distance, but as I got closer to the burning tent, I saw one of my colleagues on fire. I couldn’t continue filming.”
“I don’t even know how I found the courage to approach the flames and try to pull him out. The fire was intense. A gas canister had exploded, and another one was still burning.”
“I tried to pull him out by his leg, but his pants tore off in my hand. I tried from another angle, but I couldn’t.”
Mansour’s death was confirmed on Tuesday, and he was among several journalists injured in the attack, including Hassan Aslih, Ahmed al-Agha, Mohammed Fayeq, Abdullah al-Attar, Ihab al-Bardini, Mahmoud Awad, and Majed Qudeih. The Palestinian Media Assembly expressed its condolences, particularly mourning the loss of al-Faqawi, who reported for the Palestine Today news agency.
The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights condemned the bombing, labeling the targeting of journalists as a war crime aimed at silencing coverage of the ongoing situation in Gaza. Social media was inundated with expressions of outrage as activists criticized what they described as a systematic targeting of journalists, part of a greater pattern of human rights violations against civilians.
Under international humanitarian law, journalists are afforded protections in conflict zones. However, they continue to face lethal violence, as evidenced by the tragic fate of Mansour and his colleagues. This incident brings the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 7 to more than 211.
In response to these tragic events, the Gaza Government Media Office issued a statement emphasizing the rising toll of journalists killed since the onset of the conflict:
“The number of journalists martyred since the start of the genocidal war on Gaza has risen to 211. This includes journalist Hilmi al-Faqawi, who died instantly in the strike near Nasser Hospital, and Ahmed Mansour, who later succumbed to his injuries. Both worked with the Palestine Today news agency.”
The statement further condemned the deliberate targeting and assassination of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli occupation, calling upon the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union, and press organizations worldwide to denounce these systematic crimes. The Gaza Government Media Office holds:

- Other complicit nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and France
fully responsible for these heinous acts. They urged the international community, human rights organizations, and journalism bodies to:
