Iran’s Advancements in AI
According to the Nature Index, Iran’s position in scientific production within the field of artificial intelligence has risen from 33rd to 30th, placing the nation among the top 50 leaders in AI research. Hossein Afshin, an official with the vice-presidency of science and technology, stated that Iran’s regional ranking fluctuates between 14th to 17th, primarily due to a focus on quality research. “We’re optimistic about improving the country’s scientific position within the next two years,” he remarked, as reported by IRNA.
The Iranian government is actively working on developing AI infrastructure, which includes initiatives such as an AI platform and an AI assistant, expected to launch in the near future. Furthermore, the Oxford Insights index indicates that Iran ranks 91st among 188 countries in government readiness for implementing AI in public services, moving up three positions from 94th in 2023.
AI plays a significant role in enhancing governance and improving government performance. The Government AI Readiness Index is increasingly seen as a reliable resource for policymakers, serving as an official benchmark for national governments. This year’s index evaluates the AI readiness of 188 countries amidst complex challenges, including economic uncertainty and climate risks.
Understanding the AI Readiness Index
The 2024 index assesses 40 indicators across three crucial pillars:
- Government
- Technology Sector
- Data & Infrastructure
This comprehensive evaluation not only highlights progress but also identifies gaps and provides actionable insights for policymakers who are keen to integrate AI into public service delivery. Central to the index is the question: ‘How ready are governments to implement AI in delivering public services?’ By addressing this question, the index aims to equip policymakers with practical tools to make evidence-based decisions that enhance AI’s potential for better serving citizens worldwide.
The index reveals that Iran’s strongest performance is in the Data and Infrastructure pillar, achieving a score of 66.29, a notable improvement from 55.88 last year. This includes sub-indicators such as infrastructure (70), data availability (43), and data representativeness (121).
In the Technology pillar, Iran scored 38.82, slightly up from 38.77 in 2023. This category considers factors like human capital (54), innovation capacity (62), and maturity (82). However, the country’s lowest score is found in the Government pillar, with a score of 26.54, which has decreased from 31.56 in 2023. This assessment encompasses vision (84), governance and ethics (145), digital capacity (92), and adaptability (177).
Notably, Iran’s regional ranking has improved, climbing from 17th in 2023 to 16th in 2024. This progress reflects the Iranian government’s commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities and integrating these technologies into various sectors.
In conclusion, the upcoming ICAI 2026 promises to be a milestone event for AI enthusiasts and professionals alike, showcasing Iran’s dedication to advancing in this critical field.
