Tehran Celebrates National Day of Villagers and Nomads: A Vibrant Tribute to Tradition and Culture

The National Day of Villagers and Nomads is being celebrated in Tehran on October 6 and 7, focusing on the significance of integrated, participatory, and technological governance. This annual event, which underscores the crucial role of villagers and nomads in Iran’s political, economic, and social development, was officially recognized on October 7, 2013.

This year’s festivities feature a variety of activities including:

  • Conferences
  • Exhibitions
  • Cultural and specialized festivals

As reported by ISNA, participants from 31 provinces are showcasing their development and empowerment projects, innovative participatory models, investment opportunities, and modern technologies aimed at improving the livelihoods of villagers and nomads. This initiative also emphasizes efforts to alleviate deprivation in rural areas.

In conjunction with these events, an exhibition highlighting provincial achievements, governance ecosystems, and rural innovations is being organized. These activities are designed to foster collaboration and showcase the advancements made in rural development.

Empowering Rural Communities is Essential

During a video conference in February, Zahra Behrouz-Azar, the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, emphasized that empowering rural communities is essential for the economic and cultural progress of the nation. She elaborated on the distinctions between “villages” and “local communities,” stating:

“The rural areas’ economic activities involve agriculture, animal husbandry, crafts, and natural resources. However, the local community has a broader concept and includes different groups of people, not only in rural areas, but also in urban neighborhoods, nomadic areas, and even digital communities. Local communities rely on social interactions, traditions, beliefs, and shared human relationships.”

Behrouz-Azar made these remarks while participating in the event titled “University, Social Responsibility, and Empowering Local Areas,” as reported by Mehr news agency. In her address, she highlighted several critical needs in villages:

  • Development of agricultural infrastructure
  • Improvements in animal husbandry
  • Access to health services
  • Enhancements in education

For local communities, the focus shifts to:

  • Preserving cultural heritage
  • Fostering social interactions
  • Strengthening support networks

Notably, Behrouz-Azar pointed out that only 30% of Iran’s population lives in rural areas. She warned that the depopulation of these regions could lead to the loss of significant cultural heritage, art forms, languages, and traditional lifestyles.

She also urged universities and educational institutions to leverage their expertise and modern technologies to tackle the challenges faced by rural communities. This initiative aims to enhance productivity and improve the quality of life for farmers, particularly women, who play a vital role in rural development.

World Rural Development Day

On a global scale, July 6 is recognized as World Rural Development Day, as declared by the UN General Assembly. This day spotlights the essential roles of rural communities in:

  • Agricultural development
  • Food security
  • Ecological stewardship

The observance also advocates for the empowerment of rural populations through improved access to land, decent jobs, and inclusion in decision-making processes. This initiative reaffirms the General Assembly’s dedication to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The declaration, rooted in the spirit of international solidarity, acknowledges the persistent challenge of rural poverty, stressing the importance of addressing this issue as a prerequisite for achieving broader economic, social, and environmental sustainability goals.

Drawing from a rich history of international declarations and resolutions—from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda—the resolution aims to maintain focus on the lives and struggles of those who cultivate the land, fish the seas, and nurture the earth in rural areas worldwide.

In conclusion, the National Day of Villagers and Nomads serves as a reminder of the vital contributions of rural communities to the nation’s development and the pressing need for continued support and empowerment in these areas.
