Tehran and Baghdad Strengthen Counter-Narcotics Collaboration During Arbaeen Festival

In a significant move to strengthen their joint efforts against drug trafficking, the counter-narcotics police of Iran and Iraq have engaged in talks aimed at enhancing cooperation. This collaboration is particularly crucial during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, which attracts millions of pilgrims to Karbala each year. The recent meeting took place at the Mehran border point, the closest Iranian city to Baghdad, highlighting the importance of a united front against narcotics.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings globally, occurs 40 days after Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), a revered figure in Shia Islam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This year, the Arbaeen pilgrimage is set for August 14, drawing massive crowds to honor the memory of Imam Hussein (AS).

During the meeting, Iran’s anti-narcotics police chief, Iraj Kakavand, and his Iraqi counterpart, Ahmed Al-Zarkani, emphasized the importance of enhancing their collaboration in combating drug smuggling. Al-Zarkani stated in January that there is a crucial need for improved joint activities aimed at addressing drug trafficking and sharing intelligence between the two nations.

Al-Zarkani praised Iran’s relentless efforts in the war against narcotics and expressed a desire to strengthen joint operations with Iran’s anti-narcotics police. He remarked, “We welcome boosting joint activities with Iran’s anti-narcotics police and look forward to expanding cooperation on other drug-related issues,” as reported by ISNA.

The Iraqi official further stressed the significance of exchanging information on drug traffickers, stating, “A targeted, comprehensive fight against anti-narcotics requires a lot of efforts and goes beyond the national borders of the two countries; by fostering cooperation, we will be able to adopt appropriate measures to deal more decisively with drug trafficking.”

In response, Kakavand underscored the need to intensify efforts against armed drug traffickers operating along the shared borders. He noted that controlling the borders and monitoring drug traffickers who engage in weapon trades for narcotics would significantly reduce criminal activities perpetrated by armed smugglers.

  • Border Control: Effective management of the borders is essential to deter criminal activities.
  • Joint Operations: There is a focus on simultaneous border patrols to enhance security.
  • Information Exchange: Sharing intelligence on smuggling methods and routes is a priority.
  • Specialized Teams: Establishing specialized units to address specific drug trafficking cases.

In light of previously signed memorandums of understanding, Iran’s anti-narcotics police expressed a commitment to bolstering collaborations in various areas. These include:

  1. Simultaneous border patrols to strengthen surveillance.
  2. Learning and understanding drug smuggling methods.
  3. Establishing specialized teams for targeted operations.
  4. Exchanging information on smugglers and apprehended individuals.

The discussions and agreements reached during this meeting underscore a mutual recognition of the growing challenges posed by drug trafficking and the shared commitment to combat this pressing issue. With a united approach, both nations aim to enhance their counter-narcotics strategies and protect their communities from the threat of drug-related crime.

The effective collaboration between Iran and Iraq serves as a crucial model for international cooperation in the fight against drugs. As both countries prepare for the influx of pilgrims during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, their commitment to ensuring safety and security remains paramount. By continuing to work together, Iran and Iraq can create a more robust framework for addressing the challenges posed by drug trafficking and contribute to regional stability.

This partnership not only aims to curtail the flow of narcotics but also addresses the broader issues of crime and security that impact both nations. As the two countries move forward, their ongoing dialogue and joint efforts are expected to result in effective strategies that can be implemented in real-time, ensuring a safer environment for all.
