DOE Launches 120+ Initiatives to Safeguard Marine Coastal Ecosystems

The Department of Environment (DOE) has been diligently working on over 120 initiatives aimed at protecting the marine coastal ecosystem in Iran. These projects are vital for the preservation, management, and restoration of marine ecosystems, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.

According to Shahram Fadakar, a representative from the DOE, these initiatives cover a broad spectrum of areas, including:

  • Conservation efforts for sea turtles
  • Management of coral reef habitats
  • Coastal zoning strategies
  • Research on marine mammals
  • Assessment of the health of marine ecosystems
  • Restoration of mangrove forests

Among the key projects highlighted by Fadakar are:

  • Research focused on sea turtle nesting habitat restoration in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman
  • Monitoring of coastal and offshore ecosystems
  • Development of national action plans for endangered species
  • Assessment of marine invertebrate biodiversity

Fadakar emphasized the importance of collaboration with universities, research institutes, and relevant organizations, which has significantly enhanced the effectiveness of these projects.

Marine Biodiversity Conservation Initiatives

In April, Shina Ansari, head of the DOE, announced the establishment of a comprehensive data bank cataloging over 5,000 species found in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. This data bank is set to become a critical platform for regional and international biodiversity preservation efforts.

“This initiative includes the creation of an atlas detailing sensitive marine ecosystems and the identification of previously unknown coral reef habitats, such as the Shah Alam area near the maritime border with Qatar. This information enables effective and targeted interventions at a macro level,” Ansari stated, according to ILNA.

These remarks were made during the celebration of Persian Gulf National Day, observed annually on April 29, commemorating the historic expulsion of the Portuguese navy from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622.

The Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman feature over 4,900 kilometers of coastline in Iran, housing one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems. The DOE has undertaken various measures to conserve this biodiversity, including:

  • Developing a comprehensive data strategy and planning tool for scientific decision-making
  • Issuing seawater quality standards and discharge regulations
  • Establishing guidelines for dredging and waste disposal
  • Implementing protocols for assessing oil pollution damage

Ansari further mentioned ongoing programs such as:

  • Coral reef restoration projects
  • Registration of coastal wetlands under the Ramsar Convention
  • Development of a national action plan for mangrove conservation
  • Continuous monitoring of the marine environment

The DOE has also partnered with local communities, government bodies, and scientific institutions to create an action plan focused on the preservation of sharks and rays. This plan includes:

  • Monitoring population numbers
  • Raising awareness among fishermen
  • Empowering local fishing communities

Despite these efforts, sharks and rays face significant threats from overexploitation, illegal fishing practices, and their slow maturation and low breeding rates, putting them at risk of extinction.

Through a participatory approach, the action plan aims to:

  • Identify threats to these species
  • Minimize conflicts among stakeholders
  • Foster a culture of preservation
  • Determine priority actions for the next five years

Fadakar noted that the DOE has conducted 48 educational and participatory workshops across coastal provinces to raise awareness and engage local communities. The most recent workshop included representatives from various organizations such as the Iran Fisheries Organization, the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, the Iran Customs Administration, and the National Planning and Budget Organization. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen partnerships and further enhance marine conservation initiatives.

In conclusion, the DOE’s multi-faceted approach to marine ecosystem conservation showcases a commitment to preserving Iran’s rich marine biodiversity. Through research, community engagement, and international collaboration, these projects are paving the way for sustainable management and protection of marine resources.
