Pugwash Conferences Leader: Iran’s Enrichment Activities Can’t Be Mandated
Hussain Al-Shahristani, President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, has made a significant statement regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment program. He asserts that it is not feasible for anyone to demand Iran to halt its enrichment activities, as they are a critical aspect of the country’s pursuit of peaceful nuclear energy. This position aligns with the principles outlined in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
In a recent exchange with an IRNA reporter, Al-Shahristani responded to inquiries about U.S. demands for zero enrichment in Iran. He emphasized that:
- Enrichment and peaceful nuclear energy use are fundamental rights enshrined in the NPT.
- Any non-peaceful use of nuclear energy is deemed unacceptable and unlawful.
- Pressuring a nation to abandon enrichment is simply a slogan that lacks legitimacy.
Al-Shahristani further commented on the requests made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other parties, which urge Iran to build confidence in its nuclear energy pursuits:
- Cooperation with the IAEA is essential for transparency.
- This cooperation must be mutual, with all parties adhering to their commitments.
Earlier on the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reiterated that Iran will not enter into negotiations regarding its right to enrich uranium. He characterized the U.S. demands as “unreasonable and illogical” during the ongoing indirect negotiations with Tehran.
Moreover, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, urged U.S. officials to avoid making unfounded claims, stressing that Iran does not require permission from any nation to enrich uranium.
