Iranian Researchers Soar in Global Rankings: Rising to the Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide

Recent international data highlights the rising prominence of Iranian researchers, showcasing their remarkable growth in the top two percent of the world based on citation indicators. This upward trend indicates a significant improvement in the quality of Iran’s scientific output, reflecting the dedication and innovation within the country’s academic community.

According to the reputable “updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators,” a report released on September 19 confirms that Iran’s scientific landscape has seen unprecedented growth in both one-year performance and career-long indicators. Peyman Salehi, the deputy science minister, emphasized the importance of these findings.

Key points from the report include:

  • The number of highly cited Iranian researchers in the one-year performance index has surged from 2,326 in the Iranian year 1403 (2024-2025) to 2,533 in 1404 (2025-2026).
  • This increase of 207 researchers highlights a significant enhancement in the quality and impact of Iran’s scientific production for 2024.
  • In the career-long index, the count of highly cited Iranian researchers grew from 1,018 in 1403 to 1,021 in 1404.
  • Over a five-year span, the number of researchers in this category jumped from 433 in 1399, marking nearly a threefold increase.

Salehi elaborated on the significance of the career-long index, stating, “This index refers to a researcher’s scientific performance over their entire career and includes the total number of citations received by the researcher’s articles through the end of 2024.” This metric evaluates various factors, including the total citations, h-index, and contributions to collaborative articles.

In contrast, the single-year index assesses citations received by articles published within a specific year. The latest report utilized citations from 2024, which underscores the current scientific impact and capability of researchers to generate innovative knowledge.

Additionally, the 2024 edition of the Nature Index Research Leaders report has positioned Iran at 32nd place among Research Leaders globally. This ranking is based on data from the Nature Index collected between January 1 and December 31, 2023.

The top three institutions in Iran are:

  1. Institute for Fundamental Sciences (IPM)
  2. University of Tehran
  3. Sharif University of Technology

Iran’s regional rankings are noteworthy as well:

  • 2nd in Physical Sciences
  • 3rd in Chemistry and Health Sciences
  • 4th in Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • 5th in Biological Sciences

Of particular note is Iran’s highest global ranking in Physical Sciences, where it holds the 27th position worldwide.

The Nature Index serves as an open database of author affiliations and institutional relationships, tracking contributions to research articles published in high-quality natural science and health science journals. These journals are selected based on their reputation, assessed by an independent research group.

The Nature Index provides both absolute count and fractional share counts of article publications at institutional and national levels, serving as a reliable indicator of global high-quality research output and collaborative efforts. This data is regularly updated, providing insights into the latest advancements in research.

Compiled by Nature Research Intelligence, part of Springer Nature, the Nature Index ensures that researchers and institutions are recognized for their contributions to science, fostering an environment of collaboration and excellence in research.

In summary, the latest data not only underscores the growing influence of Iranian researchers in the global scientific community but also reflects the ongoing commitment to advancing research quality and impact in Iran. With continued support and investment in scientific endeavors, Iran is poised to further enhance its position in the world of research.
