Iran Weighs Participation in Upcoming U.S. Talks: Insights from Araqchi

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi recently announced that the country is evaluating its participation in the upcoming round of indirect talks with the United States. He cautioned that excessive demands from Washington could jeopardize the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Araqchi emphasized that Iran has already addressed the “unreasonable demands” put forth by U.S. officials. He pointed out that such unrealistic positions could significantly hinder the progress of negotiations.

He stated, “Enrichment will continue with or without an agreement. However, if the parties wish for transparency regarding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, we are ready. However, in return, discussions must take place about the removal of the cruel sanctions imposed because of allegations about our nuclear program, and these sanctions must be lifted.”

When questioned about the fifth round of talks, Araqchi remarked, “We are assessing whether or not to participate in the next round of negotiations.”

He reiterated Iran’s firm stance against excessive demands during the negotiations, noting that the country has never shied away from diplomatic dialogue. Key points highlighted by Araqchi include:

  • Continued enrichment activities irrespective of an agreement.
  • Willingness to discuss transparency regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
  • Demand for the lifting of sanctions linked to the nuclear allegations.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, indicated that no agreement could be reached unless Iran completely abandons its enrichment program. This statement aligns with the sentiments expressed by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, who dismissed such demands as “excessive” and cautioned that the negotiations might not yield fruitful results.
