Iran Stands Firm: Parliament Declares Unwavering Commitment to Nuclear Technology Rights

In a recent statement, Iranian lawmakers have asserted that Iran will steadfastly defend its right to utilize nuclear technology as a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This declaration emphasizes the nation’s commitment to a peaceful nuclear program.

On Wednesday, members of Parliament made their position clear, reinforcing that Iran has never attempted to develop, nor will it ever pursue, an atomic bomb. The statement was made in response to what the legislators termed as “nonsense” remarks from American officials regarding Iran’s nuclear pursuits.

The lawmakers expressed their sentiments in the chamber, stating:

“The noble nation of Iran, these days, we are witnessing that American officials and some members of Congress have made statements contrary to the interests of the Iranian nation.”

The U.S. has historically been labeled as the “axis of evil,” with claims that Iran, a nation celebrated for its resilience, should not reap the benefits of the nuclear industry. The lawmakers strongly criticized these assertions.

Efforts to reach a potential agreement between Tehran and Washington have seen four rounds of indirect negotiations, aimed at finding a replacement for the previous agreement that President Donald Trump withdrew from during his administration.

  • Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, indicated that no agreement would be feasible unless Iran ceased its enrichment program.
  • Iranian officials have firmly rejected this condition, affirming that they will not compromise on their right to enrich uranium.
  • They also condemned Washington for making “excessive” demands and issuing “contradictory” statements.

In their statement, the lawmakers emphasized that Iran’s nuclear activities, including uranium enrichment, are:

  • Legal
  • Legitimate
  • In accordance with the provisions of the NPT and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) statute.

They highlighted that Article IV of the NPT grants every member state the inalienable right to “develop research, production and use of nuclear energy” for peaceful purposes. The statement further noted:

“Legally, the Islamic Republic of Iran must also benefit from the full nuclear fuel cycle, particularly in the field of enrichment.”

The lawmakers reiterated that the only explicit condition in Article IV of the NPT pertains to the peaceful nature of nuclear activities, which is safeguarded through the monitoring mechanisms provided by the IAEA.
