Iran Eyes Expanded Cooperation with Africa Through Free Trade Area Initiatives
In a recent address, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized the potential for economic synergy between Iran and African nations. He outlined the Islamic Republic’s intentions to enhance economic cooperation within a framework of free trade zones, highlighting the mutual benefits such collaboration can yield.
“Today, we witness Africa’s prudent efforts to achieve significant accomplishments, among which the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area stands out as one of the most important,” Araqchi remarked during a ceremony in Tehran on May 25, commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the African Union, also known as Africa Day. The event was attended by African ambassadors and dignitaries from across the continent.
In his speech, Araqchi stated:
Esteemed Iranian officials present,
Honorable ambassadors,
Dear and respected colleagues,
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
“At the outset, I would like to express my pleasure to commemorate this grand occasion of Africa Day alongside my African friends. This international event reflects the shared values within the African community.”
The Foreign Minister elaborated on Africa’s vibrant demographic landscape:
- The continent has a population of 1.4 billion across 55 countries.
- Africa is characterized by its youthful and dynamic populace.
- Rich linguistic and cultural diversity exists despite various differences.
“Meeting you, my African friends, reminds us of the efforts of African nations to break the chains of oppression and strive for progress and a better tomorrow,” Araqchi continued. He paid tribute to notable African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and Nelson Mandela, underlining the enduring legacy of their contributions.
Araqchi also referenced the African Union’s 2025 slogan, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” emphasizing the continent’s commitment to addressing historical injustices.
“Africa’s effort to acquire a seat on the United Nations Security Council demonstrates how much the continent has added significant new achievements to the initial foundation,” he noted.
The Foreign Minister highlighted Africa’s journey towards development:
- The establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area forms the world’s largest trade zone.
- Iran aims to leverage its long-standing relations to promote economic cooperation.
- Natural resources from Africa combined with Iran’s modern technology can satisfy mutual needs.
He further mentioned the successful conclusion of the third Iran-Africa economic cooperation forum, which promises a bright future for bilateral relations:
“The Islamic Republic of Iran, considering its deep-rooted relations with Africa, seeks economic cooperation with this region within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.”
Araqchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to fostering these relations, stating:
- Cooperation can extend across various sectors including politics, economics, and health.
- Opportunities for academic exchange and technological collaboration are also available.
“The government of Dr. Pezeshkian places special emphasis on African issues, and I hope this cooperation will have a bright future,” he concluded.
