Iran Explores Enhanced Health Partnerships with India and Uzbekistan

In a significant move towards enhancing health cooperation, Iranian Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi recently engaged with his counterparts from India and Uzbekistan at the eighth meeting of the health ministries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Xi’an, China. This meeting aimed to explore collaborative opportunities in various health sectors, including pharmaceuticals and traditional medicine.

The discussions unfolded during separate meetings held on the sidelines of the SCO gathering, as reported by the health ministry’s official website. The focus was on strengthening ties and sharing expertise in critical areas of health and medicine.

Collaboration with India

During his meeting with Punya Salila Srivastava, the Indian Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Zafarqandi emphasized the importance of joint efforts in the health sector. Key points discussed included:

In response, Srivastava mentioned an existing agreement between India and Iran and expressed India’s eagerness to broaden collaborations in various health sectors.

Engagement with Uzbekistan

In a separate meeting, Uzbek Health Minister Asilbek Khudayarov reaffirmed the friendly relations between Uzbekistan and Iran. He indicated Uzbekistan’s willingness to expand collaboration in:

  • Health Tourism: Promoting health tourism as a mutual benefit.
  • Cancer Treatment: Enhancing joint initiatives in cancer care.
  • Academic Exchange: Encouraging the exchange of professors and postgraduate students.

Khudayarov also discussed the registration of Iranian medicines in Uzbekistan, suggesting that Iranian companies establish manufacturing bases in Uzbekistan to streamline the registration process and access the West Asia market. Zafarqandi responded positively, indicating Iran’s readiness to enhance ties with Uzbekistan across various health fields including:

  • Cell and gene therapy

The Eighth SCO Meeting: Overview

Minister Zafarqandi is leading a delegation at the eighth meeting of the SCO health ministries, which includes health ministers from several member countries including China, India, Russia, and Pakistan, along with representatives from the World Health Organization. The meeting commenced on April 24 and will continue for a week, focusing on the theme ‘promoting sustainable health development and sharing a healthy future’.

Opportunities for Iran-China Cooperation

On the first day of the meeting, Zafarqandi participated in a session titled ‘Health Based on Transformation and Innovation: New Opportunities for Iran-China Cooperation in the Field of Medical Technology’. Emphasizing the advancements made by both nations in pharmaceutical raw materials and medical equipment, Zafarqandi expressed optimism about expanding the medical partnership between Iran and China. He highlighted the potential for practical steps to follow President Masoud Pezeshkian’s recent visit to China.

During this session, representatives from 18 Chinese pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturing companies presented their products and discussed potential collaborations in:

  • Medical manufacturing
  • Technology transfer
  • Meeting Iran’s medical needs
