In Iran, despite constitutional guarantees for free education, parents are forced to pay bribes for their children’s enrollment, revealing a troubling reality of corruption in the educational system. Many express frustration over illegal fees, with some parents coerced into paying up to 20 million tomans for a public school spot. This has resulted in a class-based education system where wealthy families access better resources, while poorer families struggle with underfunded public schools. As millions of children, particularly from marginalized regions, remain out of school, the government’s failure to uphold educational rights deepens inequality, threatening future opportunities for an entire generation.
Iran recently hosted the fourth BRICS working group meeting on geospatial technologies from September 30 to October 1, with participation from Brazil, China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Ethiopia, South Africa, and the UAE. Organized in collaboration with various scientific institutions, the conference focused on enhancing cooperation in geospatial data and its applications. Discussions aimed to formalize a multilateral cooperation document to guide future collaborations. Ali Javidaneh emphasized the vital role of maps and spatial data in sustainable development. The meeting highlighted the potential of geospatial technologies, integrated with AI and big data, to drive economic growth and informed decision-making among member states.
Iran’s Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology has unveiled a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) action plan aimed at enhancing the country’s scientific landscape. Developed with the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, the plan focuses on integrating AI into education and various economic sectors, promoting innovation, and fostering international collaborations. Key initiatives include establishing national AI laboratories, developing specialized postgraduate programs, creating research centers, and launching a secure data-sharing platform. Iran has improved its global standing in AI, ranking 30th in scientific production and 91st in government readiness for AI implementation, reflecting significant advancements in infrastructure and data availability.

Sharif University of Technology has inaugurated the first joint science and technology park at Baghdad University, a project developed over 18 months to strengthen Iraq’s scientific landscape. Attended by key figures from both universities, the initiative is structured as a five-year plan, with the first stage focusing on space allocation, faculty collaboration, opportunity analysis, and legal framework development. Iraq aims to leverage Iran’s expertise in technology parks to enhance academic cooperation. Iranian universities plan to establish branches in Iraq, fostering deeper cultural and educational ties, while both nations commit to expanding scientific collaboration and addressing shared challenges.
