Iran Asserts Unconditional Sovereignty Over Key Persian Gulf Islands, U.N. Envoy Declares

In a recent development, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir-Sa’eed Iravani, vehemently rejected claims of interference regarding the sovereignty of three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf. This statement follows the 163rd meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers and underscores Iran’s commitment to international law and the UN Charter.

The full text of Iravani’s letter emphasizes several key points:

  1. Rejection of Claims: Iravani stated that paragraphs 41 to 45 of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s statement contain “clear and unacceptable interference” in Iran’s internal affairs. The Islamic Republic of Iran firmly condemns these baseless assertions and reaffirms its sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb.
  2. Historical Name of the Gulf: Regarding the mention of a “falsified name” for the Persian Gulf in paragraph 44, Iravani stressed that “Persian Gulf” is the only historically and legally recognized name for this body of water, demanding respect for its historical accuracy.
  3. Iran’s Foreign Policy: In paragraph 62, the letter clarifies that Iran’s foreign policy is rooted in principles of international law, emphasizing mutual respect, constructive cooperation, and dialogue with all Persian Gulf neighbors to foster regional peace and security.
  4. Nuclear Program Context: Iravani labeled the references to Iran’s nuclear and missile programs in paragraphs 63 to 65 as unfounded. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), asserting that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes in accordance with its rights under the Treaty.

In conclusion, Ambassador Iravani has requested that this letter be circulated as a document of the Security Council, reinforcing Iran’s position on these critical matters.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Amir Saeid Iravani

H.E. Mr. Jérôme Bonafont
