Iran and Turkey Strengthen Scientific Collaboration with New MOU Between Universities

In a significant advancement for academic collaboration, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and Suleyman Demirel University of Turkey have established a scientific, research, and educational memorandum of understanding (MOU). This partnership aims to enhance educational exchanges and research initiatives between the two institutions.

The MOU was officially signed by Seyyed Basir Hashemi, the Chancellor of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, and Alim Koşar, Vice Rector of Suleyman Demirel University. This agreement signifies a commitment to fostering academic cooperation and aims to strengthen ties through various collaborative efforts.

According to the details of the MOU, both universities plan to:

• Conduct international courses and seminars

Hashemi emphasized that the signed MOU is essential for promoting science diplomacy and expanding international collaborations in the academic field. He stated that it would provide a framework for sharing expertise and advancing modern technologies, which is crucial for improving health indices.

During a meeting on April 26, Mohammad Nabi Shahiki, the deputy science minister of innovation and technology, met with Mustafa Aydin, the president of the Eurasian Universities Union (EURAS). The discussion revolved around the capacities of both nations and the potential for expanding scientific cooperation.

Key proposals from the meeting included:

• Establishment of a technology transfer office
• Collaboration in water technology, energy, and artificial intelligence
• Implementation of joint projects between the Scientific and Industrial Research Organizations of Iran and Turkey, with a focus on technology transfer to the industrial sector

Both sides reached an agreement to launch a joint research center focused on the digital economy. They also discussed the possibility of regularly holding startup events and defining collaborative postdoctoral projects in sectors such as:

• Modern agriculture
• Biomaterials
• Biotechnology

The officials expressed their commitment to fostering ties among universities in both countries, reinforcing their dedication to enhancing scientific and technological collaborations.

Moreover, in February, representatives from Mazandaran’s science and technology park and Istanbul’s Biruni Teknopark engaged in discussions aimed at broadening their technological and scientific interactions. During this online meeting, Karim Soleimani, head of Mazandaran’s science and technology park, and Sezgin Erzan, general manager of Biruni Teknopark, underscored the importance of boosting cooperation in technology.

The two parties agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding that would focus on:

• Establishing technology transfer offices
• Supporting the establishment of Iranian and Turkish companies in both countries
• Facilitating Iranian companies’ entry into new markets
