World Cities Day

World Cities Day was celebrated in Tehran with a theme centered on Smart Cities, Sustainable Innovation, Green Buildings, and a Bright Future. The event was conducted both in-person and online, attracting a wide range of participants, including government organizations, academic institutions, professional bodies, the private sector, young innovators, city managers, students, and other stakeholders.

The key objectives of the event included:

  • Sharing expertise
  • Showcasing innovative urban projects
  • Discussing the challenges and opportunities of sustainable urban development at both national and global levels

According to the UN Iran Habitat website, the event focused on smart cities, technological innovation, sustainable construction, urban resilience, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

World Cities Day is observed annually on October 31, marking the conclusion of Urban October. First celebrated in 2014, this day features a global observance hosted by a different city each year, focusing on a specific theme relevant to urbanization.

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) established this observance to promote interest in global urbanization, encourage international cooperation in addressing urbanization challenges, and contribute to sustainable urban development worldwide.

The Global Observance of World Cities Day 2025 took place in Bogotá, Colombia, with a focus on people-centred smart cities. This event highlighted how data-driven decision-making, technology, and artificial intelligence can enhance urban life and facilitate recovery from current challenges and crises.

The theme for this year underscores the growing acknowledgment of the transformative potential of digital technologies in reshaping urban life globally. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing human needs, inclusivity, and accessibility in the development of smart cities.

Furthermore, this observance serves as a platform for cities to exchange best practices, experiences, and strategies in implementing people-centred smart city initiatives worldwide, particularly in addressing critical issues such as the global housing crisis.

Ultimately, by raising global awareness about the role of technology and innovation in improving access to adequate housing and achieving urban development, the aim is to foster international cooperation and collaboration across all sectors towards the goal of advancing People-Centred Smart Cities.
