Global Icons Named Judges for Tehran International Short Film Festival: Celebrating Cinematic Excellence!

The 42nd Tehran International Short Film Festival (TISFF) has unveiled the jury members for its International Competition and AI sections, showcasing a blend of esteemed national and international figures in the realm of short films. This year’s festival promises to spotlight innovative storytelling and artistic expression, reinforcing its status as a premier platform for filmmakers.

According to the festival’s official website, the jury for the International Competition includes a diverse group of accomplished professionals:

  • Saeid Ebrahimifar – Iranian filmmaker
  • Thom Palmen – Dutch director
  • Mirona Radu – Romanian filmmaker
  • Damien Kocur – Polish director
  • Joe Chang – Chinese animation director

These distinguished jury members will evaluate selected works across various categories, including fiction, animation, documentary, and experimental films.

Saeid Ebrahimifar is known for his poetic and experimental approach to Iranian cinema. His notable works include:

  • Nar-O-Ney – First feature film
  • The Eid of Those Years
  • The Confrontation
  • Lonesome Trees
  • Maybe It Wasn’t Love

Ebrahimifar has gained recognition for his impactful storytelling and has participated in numerous national and international festivals, significantly contributing to the promotion of Iranian cinema.

Thom Palmen, a seasoned Dutch curator and artistic director, brings over three decades of experience in international film and arts festivals. He co-founded the Umeå International Film Festival, helping it become a leading independent cinema platform. Palmen has also served on the jury panels of prestigious festivals such as Berlinale and Cannes, showcasing his extensive involvement in the film industry.

Mirona Radu is a prominent Romanian filmmaker and cultural manager. With nearly 20 years in the industry, she founded the Film O’Clock International Festival and championed the “Her Story, Her Future” mentorship program, supporting women in film. Radu’s expertise extends to her roles as artistic director for several festivals, including the Palestinian Film Festival in Romania.

Damien Kocur is a Polish director whose debut feature, Bread and Salt, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Special Jury Prize. His recent short film, As It Was, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2023. Kocur’s contributions to cinema have earned him recognition, including the Polish Film Award for “Discovery of the Year.”

Joe Chang, a distinguished animation director, has made significant contributions to the field since his move to Canada in 1990. He founded the animation program at the China Academy of Art and has seen his films screened at over 200 international festivals, including Cannes and Annecy.

The jury for the International AI Competition of the 42nd TISFF features:

  • Tiyam Yabandeh – Iranian filmmaker
  • Amir Saharkhiz – Iranian writer and director
  • Neda Dagdoug – Tunisian animation director

This panel will assess the films entered in the AI section of the festival. Tiyam Yabandeh is a noted curator and researcher in experimental cinema and new media, while Amir Saharkhiz has made significant contributions in animation and visual effects, earning numerous awards throughout his career.

Neda Dagdoug is a talented Tunisian caricaturist and animation filmmaker known for her educational workshops and impactful films, including works addressing societal issues. Her contributions have made her a respected figure in the animation community.

The Tehran International Short Film Festival is recognized as one of Asia’s most prestigious platforms, dedicated to promoting creative excellence and diverse voices in cinema. Organized by the Iranian Youth Cinema Society (IYCS), TISFF is an OSCARS®-qualifying festival that celebrates innovation while honoring cinematic traditions.

This year’s festival will continue until October 24, providing a unique opportunity for filmmakers, audiences, and industry professionals to engage with groundbreaking short films and explore the evolving landscape of cinema.
