Celebrate Life: Join Us for Organ Donation Awareness Week!

The upcoming national ‘Organ Donation, Life Donation’ week is set to commence on Thursday and will continue until May 21. This annual observance, organized by the health ministry, aims to raise awareness and promote the vital culture of organ donation following brain death. This initiative is not only a therapeutic mission but also a significant social, cultural, and religious undertaking that has the potential to save countless lives through organ transplantation.

This year’s theme for the week is ‘promoting the culture of organ donation after brain death,’ according to the health ministry’s official website. Each day of the week will focus on a specific aspect of organ donation to enhance public understanding and engagement.

  • Thursday, May 15: Focus on the importance of organ donation in saving lives and improving patients’ quality of life.
  • Friday, May 16: Emphasis on education as a vital component in raising public awareness on organ donation after brain death.
  • Saturday, May 17: Comprehensive information dissemination to promote the culture of organ donation following brain death.
  • Sunday, May 18: Encouragement of interaction, empowerment, and participatory approaches from governmental and non-governmental organizations regarding organ donation and transplantation.
  • Monday, May 19: Highlighting the role of organ donation coordinators as key pillars in organ transplantation.
  • Tuesday, May 20: Acknowledging the families of organ donors as the most sublime individuals in terms of sacrifice and forgiveness.
  • Wednesday, May 21: Commemorating The National Organ Donation, Life Donation Day.

In addition to this important week, Shiraz is currently hosting the fourth annual Eurasian-Iranian organ transplant congress from May 13 to 15. The event, organized by the Abu-Ali-Sina Transplant Center, brings together approximately 80 national and international professors and experts from various countries, including Spain, Belarus, the USA, Russia, Belgium, Lebanon, and Austria. They will share their insights and knowledge either in person or through online platforms, as reported by ILNA.

The congress is also welcoming about 50 participants from countries such as Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Kuwait, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Turkey, and more. This gathering serves as a significant opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration in the field of organ transplantation.

Ali Malek-Hosseini, recognized as Iran’s father of liver transplant, stated, “Abu-Ali-Sina is a unique medical center in terms of rates and success in transplant surgeries.” He highlighted that approximately 98 percent of kidney transplants performed at this center and throughout Iran are conducted using organs from brain-dead donors. This is particularly noteworthy, as many countries still rely on live donors for kidney transplants.

The week will culminate with the ‘Great Ceremony of Life,’ an event designed to honor the families of brain-dead patients who have made the profound decision to donate their loved ones’ organs. This ceremony is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by these families and aims to foster a greater understanding of the importance of organ donation within society.
