Iran Makes Significant Strides in AI Research Rankings, Reports Official

TEHRAN – In a significant development for Iran’s scientific landscape, the country has made notable strides in its ranking for scientific production in Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to the latest data from the Nature Index, Iran’s position has improved from 33rd to 30th globally, securing a place among the top 50 leaders in this vital field. Hossein Afshin, an official with the Vice-Presidency of Science and Technology, shared this news, emphasizing the country’s commitment to enhancing its scientific stature.

Afshin noted that Iran’s regional ranking fluctuates between 14th and 17th, largely attributed to a strong emphasis on quality over quantity. He expressed optimism for further advancements, stating, “We’re optimistic to improve the country’s scientific position within the next two years,” as reported by IRNA.

The Iranian government is actively pursuing the development of AI infrastructure, which includes the creation of an AI platform and an AI assistant aimed at improving public services and boosting technological capabilities.

Government AI Readiness

In addition to advancements in scientific research, Iran’s readiness to implement AI in public services is highlighted in the Oxford Insights AI Readiness Index. This index evaluates government preparedness across 188 countries, and Iran has climbed three positions to rank 91st in 2024.

AI is increasingly recognized as a crucial element in enhancing government efficiency and responsiveness. The Government AI Readiness Index serves as a vital resource for policymakers and has been adopted as an official benchmark by various national governments.

This year’s index scrutinizes 40 indicators within three main pillars: Government, Technology Sector, and Data & Infrastructure. It aims to shed light on progress, pinpoint gaps, and provide actionable insights for policymakers striving to integrate AI into the delivery of public services.

Key aspects of the index include:

  • Government: Evaluates how prepared governments are to implement AI.
  • Technology Sector: Measures innovation and technological capabilities.
  • Data & Infrastructure: Assesses the availability and representativeness of data.

The core question posed by the index is: “How ready are governments to implement AI in the delivery of public services?” By answering this, the index provides a practical tool that aids in evidence-based decision-making, empowering policymakers to unlock AI’s potential for better serving citizens globally.

Iran’s Performance in the AI Readiness Index

According to the latest findings, Iran’s best performance is noted in the Data and Infrastructure pillar, scoring 66.29, which reflects an improvement from last year’s score of 55.88. This score includes various indicators:

  • Data Availability: 43
  • Data Representativeness: 121

In the Technology pillar, Iran achieved a score of 38.82, slightly up from 38.77 in 2023. This comprises:

  • Human Capital: 54
  • Innovation Capacity: 62
  • Maturity: 82

However, Iran’s lowest score was recorded in the Government pillar, which stands at 26.54, a decline from 31.56 in the previous year. This pillar includes:

  • Vision: 84
  • Governance and Ethics: 145
  • Digital Capacity: 92
  • Adaptability: 177

Notably, Iran’s ranking in the region has improved by one position, moving from 17th in 2023 to 16th in 2024, showcasing the country’s ongoing efforts to bolster its AI capabilities and readiness.
