Iran’s UN Envoy Denounces France’s ‘Irresponsible’ Claims on Nuclear Program

In a recent development, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, strongly refuted claims made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot regarding Iran supposedly being “on the cusp of developing nuclear weapons.” These allegations have been labeled as unfounded and politically irresponsible, highlighting Iran’s commitment to its peaceful nuclear program.

Iravani addressed the matter with a comprehensive statement, emphasizing several key points regarding Iran’s nuclear intentions:

  1. Unfounded Accusations: Iravani stated, “Allegations that Iran is ‘on the cusp’ of developing nuclear weapons are entirely unfounded and politically irresponsible.” He asserted that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons and remains committed to rejecting all weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
  2. Commitment to Treaties: As a founding member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iran continues to uphold its obligations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has consistently confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities.
  3. Impact of the JCPOA: The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a significant achievement, disrupted by the United States’ withdrawal and the E3’s failure to meet their economic commitments. Iravani emphasized that Iran’s response was in accordance with the JCPOA’s Articles 26 and 36.
  4. Political Coercion: Iravani condemned Barrot’s threats of reimposing sanctions as acts of political and economic coercion that violate the principles of the United Nations Charter.
  5. France’s Non-Proliferation Credibility: Iravani pointed out that France’s credibility on non-proliferation is compromised due to its own nuclear arsenal modernization and its complicity in the Israeli nuclear weapons program.

Furthermore, Iravani reiterated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its commitment to diplomacy and constructive engagement.” He stressed that true diplomacy cannot flourish under the shadow of threats or coercion. For a diplomatic resolution to be viable, France and its allies must respect the sovereign rights of states under international law.
