In a significant move to enhance urban management and international collaboration, Tehran mayor Alireza Zakani met with Antonio Sánchez Benedito Gaspar, Spain’s ambassador to Iran. This meeting, held on Tuesday, focused on exploring innovative strategies to strengthen ties between Tehran and Spanish cities, particularly in the realms of technology and urban development.

During the meeting, Zakani emphasized the importance of community engagement and elite participation in managing Tehran effectively. He stated, “To manage the city, we benefit from elites, communities, and public participation.” This approach has contributed to the city’s successful development, aided by an impressive eightfold increase in financial resources over the past four years.

Zakani further elaborated that this financial boost has enabled significant advancements in various sectors, stating, “Accordingly, transportation, environment, air pollution, technology, and smart city development will experience fundamental changes in the years to come.” He confidently predicted that Tehran is on the path to becoming one of the most technologically advanced cities in the future.

The mayor also proposed that Tehran could collaborate with Madrid and Barcelona in critical sectors such as technology and transportation, thus fostering a fruitful partnership between the cities.

In response, Sánchez Benedito Gaspar acknowledged the longstanding respectful relations between Iran and Spain. He highlighted the embassy’s commitment to remaining open during challenging times, stating, “Unlike other European countries, the embassy of Spain was not closed since we are interested in interacting with Iran in times of crisis and peace.” This statement underscores Spain’s dedication to nurturing diplomatic relationships even amid geopolitical tensions.

Gaspar expressed enthusiasm for strengthening ties specifically in transportation and other collaborative fields, showcasing a mutual interest in developing practical solutions to urban challenges.

Smart City Exhibition and Conference

In addition to diplomatic discussions, Tehran recently hosted the sixth Iran Smart City Exhibition and Conference from November 4 to 6. This event, themed around Iran’s smart cities and artificial intelligence, was strategically timed to coincide with World Cities Day.
