INSF and SRSF Join Forces: Boosting Innovation Through Collaborative Research Projects

The collaboration between the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) and the Silk Road Joint Science Fund (SRSF), alongside the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is paving the way for innovative advancements in research. This partnership aims to enhance scientific synergies through the funding of six promising research projects that will address critical areas of study.

According to recent reports from IRNA, each research initiative will receive a grant of 40 billion rials (approximately $44,000) and will span a maximum of three years. The funding will be directed towards several key fields, including:

  • Water Science: Focus areas include ecological economics of water consumption, agricultural water management, sustainable management of natural water resources, and water treatment, purification, and desalination.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): This encompasses the development of trustworthy AI, reinforced deep learning, diagnostic models, generative AI, large language models, novel learning algorithms, knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR), and new architectures of deep neural networks.

This initiative is part of a larger collaborative effort between Iran and China. Following the fifth joint call from INSF and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), ten additional research projects have been supported, focusing on various fields, including:

  • Traditional Medicine and Medicinal Plants: This includes evidence-based integration and standardization of traditional Chinese and Persian medicine for major diseases, sustainable medicinal plants, eco-cultivation, biodiversity, and resilience. Moreover, the application of digital and AI tools in the classification, analysis, and clinical research of traditional medicine and medicinal plants is also a focus.
  • Energy: Research areas in this field include renewable energy, high-efficiency utilization of conventional energy, energy-related materials, storage technologies, and the application of artificial intelligence in energy.

On May 31 and June 1, an Iranian-Chinese workshop was held, sponsored by both the Iran National Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. This workshop, titled ‘Emerging Technologies and Methods for Climate Resilience,’ was organized by Sharif University of Technology and Chongqing University, China, and was conducted in both in-person and online formats in English.

The objective of this workshop was to explore innovative strategies to bolster urban climate change resilience. Key topics discussed included:

  • Climate-responsive Urban Design: Techniques and technologies that improve urban planning and infrastructure to cope with climate impacts.
  • Climate Risk Management: New methodologies to assess and manage risks associated with climate change.
  • Urban Energy Transitioning: Strategies for transitioning urban areas to sustainable energy sources.
  • Water Resilience: Integrated system planning to ensure sustainable water management.
  • Smart Governance and Social Adaptation: Approaches to adapt governance frameworks to effectively respond to climate challenges.
  • Climate System Modeling: Tools and techniques to assess and predict climate change impacts.

The workshop also emphasized the utilization of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics in tackling climate change. These technologies are vital for:

  • Analyzing data to inform climate adaptation strategies.
  • Developing sustainable infrastructure to support climate-resilient cities.
  • Enhancing resource management practices for better climate outcomes.
  • Fostering international cooperation in developing joint solutions for urban resilience.

Through these collaborative efforts, Iran and China are not only advancing scientific research but are also setting a precedent for international cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change. The outcomes of these projects and workshops are expected to contribute significantly to the body of knowledge in their respective fields, ultimately leading to more sustainable and resilient communities.

With nearly 35,000 registered refugees in 20 settlements, WFP continues to address food security needs through various programs, amid an evolving economic landscape and ongoing humanitarian challenges in Iran.

Rabies, a viral disease fatal once symptoms appear, primarily spreads through dog bites. This year’s theme, “Act now: You, Me, Community,” encourages collective responsibility in combating rabies. Proactive measures include pet vaccination, community education, and organizing vaccination campaigns. The World Health Organization aims for zero rabies deaths by 2030, highlighting the importance of immediate post-exposure care and community involvement in eliminating this preventable disease.
