WIPO Welcomes 13 Exciting New Iranian Products to Global Market

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has made significant strides in recognizing Iranian products, with the recent registration of thirteen new items, as announced by Mehdi Mirsalehi, a senior advisor at Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade. This development underscores the increasing global acknowledgment of Iran’s rich cultural heritage and natural resources.

According to Mirsalehi, the newly registered products comprise a variety of items, including:

  • Mineral stones
  • Agricultural goods
  • Traditional handicrafts

Some of the standout items include:

  • Rosewater from the city of Kashan
  • Grapes and apples from Urmia
  • A handwoven carpet from Fars Province

With these additions, the total number of Iranian products registered with WIPO has now reached 87. Mirsalehi highlighted that Iran’s journey towards international product registration began back in 2010, with the global recognition of its exquisite handwoven carpets. Since then, 31 carpet-producing regions, along with various agricultural and mineral products, have been successfully added to the registry.

WIPO is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations, established to promote creative works and safeguard intellectual property rights on a global scale. This recent development not only enhances Iran’s image on the international stage but also opens new avenues for economic growth and cultural exchange.

In addition to the product registrations, WIPO has also published its 2024 Global Innovation Index (GII) report, which assesses Iran’s innovation capabilities across several criteria. These criteria include:

As per the report, Iran is currently ranked 133rd globally in the Institutions category. The specific rankings in this category include:

  • Entrepreneurship policies and culture: 85

In the Human Capital and Research criterion, Iran ranks 64th. The country’s performance in this area includes:

  • Education: 93
  • Expenditure on education: 109
  • Government funding per pupil: 67
  • School life expectancy: 66
  • Pupil-teacher ratio: 96

When it comes to Tertiary Education, Iran ranks 35th, with additional rankings in:

  • Graduates in science and engineering: 8

In terms of Infrastructure, Iran’s global ranking is 95th, with specific rankings in:

  • Gross capital formation: 5
  • General infrastructure: 50
