West Azarbaijan Tourism Set to Soar: A New Era of Adventure Awaits!
The tourism industry in West Azarbaijan province is set for a significant transformation, aiming to enhance its infrastructure and capitalize on various projects. Morteza Safari, the head of the West Azarbaijan Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, shared insights on this promising development during a recent statement.
On September 28, Safari emphasized that tourism flourishes in secure environments. He noted that while the sector had previously received inadequate attention, it is now a vital part of West Azarbaijan’s development narrative. “Tourism is no longer sidelined; it has become an integral component of our growth strategy,” he stated.
To fully utilize the province’s tourism potential, Safari called for unity among tourism stakeholders, stressing that collective efforts and teamwork are essential for the industry’s advancement. “The development of the tourism industry requires collaboration among all involved parties,” he added.
Safari highlighted that tourism is a lucrative sector that demands modern knowledge and skills. He pointed out some challenges faced by local accommodation and catering services, stating, “Although the quality of food in provincial establishments is commendable, there are shortcomings in how staff serve and present food. Customer service behavior must improve to avoid deterring potential visitors.”
He also mentioned the importance of cultivating a growth-oriented mindset among stakeholders. “To achieve true development, we must first foster a mentality of progress and evolution; once this mindset takes root, development will naturally follow,” Safari explained.
As part of the ongoing efforts to boost tourism, Safari shared exciting news regarding infrastructure development. Currently, there are 11 hotels under construction in the province. Following an investment conference, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a five-star hotel project in Mahabad, along with a commercial and tourism complex in Miandoab. Additionally, an investor has plans to establish another five-star hotel in Urmia in the near future.
Safari detailed that a total of 52 projects are being implemented by the private sector, which highlights the growing interest and investment in West Azarbaijan’s tourism. He also mentioned that efforts are underway to restore historical monuments and improve access routes to key tourist attractions, with a dedicated office overseeing these initiatives.

This village is currently among the eight contenders for UNESCO registration, and hopes for its successful registration remain high. “The recognition from UNESCO would not only honor our cultural heritage but also significantly boost tourism in the area,” he stated.
