The Iranian anti-narcotics police have made substantial strides in combating drug trafficking, seizing more than 113,278 tons of narcotics since the start of the current Iranian year on March 21. This impressive figure showcases the nation’s commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes, particularly in the eastern provinces of the country, where 75% of these narcotics were discovered.
Utilizing modern technologies, the police have successfully dismantled 816 drug trafficking bands, seized 292 weapons, and apprehended 6,502 vehicles involved in drug transportation, according to a report by IRNA. Moreover, the authorities disrupted eleven online drug trafficking networks, leading to the seizure of 292 kilograms of narcotics.
Honoring National Heroes
Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaqari, the secretary general of the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ), emphasized the importance of martyrs and war veterans who have dedicated their lives to the fight against narcotics. He referred to these individuals as national heroes who work tirelessly to ensure the security and safety of the populace. Zolfaqari expressed his sentiments during a speech on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, celebrated annually on June 26.
“Thanks to their efforts, the anti-narcotics police are capable of taking more effective national and international measures in the fight against drugs,” Zolfaqari stated, as reported by ILNA. He highlighted their perseverance and determination, stating that they deserve deep respect and appreciation.
Iran’s Role in the Global Fight Against Drugs
In his address, Zolfaqari elaborated on Iran’s pivotal role in the global fight against narcotics. The country faces unique challenges due to its geographical proximity to Afghanistan, a major source of illegal drugs. Nevertheless, Iranian counter-narcotics and security forces have conducted extensive operations over the years to thwart smugglers and dismantle their networks.
- The martyrdom of 3,800 individuals underscores Iran’s commitment to combating narcotics.
- Approximately 12,000 others have been injured in the line of duty, highlighting the dangers faced by these forces.
To further enhance its anti-drug efforts, the DCHQ collaborates with both governmental and non-governmental organizations to implement various initiatives. These initiatives include:
- Preventive programs aimed at reducing drug use.
- Support for addicts to help them recover and reintegrate into society.
- Development of treatment centres to provide care and assistance to those affected by drug abuse.
World Drug Day Campaigns
World Drug Day serves as a platform to promote action and cooperation toward achieving a world free from drug abuse. This year’s campaign, titled “Break the Cycle. Stop Organized Crime,” focuses on the need for coordinated long-term strategies to dismantle organized crime and drug trafficking. The campaign emphasizes:
- Addressing the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking.
- Investing in prevention programs, including justice, education, and healthcare.
- Building stronger social systems to promote sustainable resilience.
The message is clear: collaborative efforts and investments in various sectors are essential to effectively tackle the ongoing challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse.
By continuing to strengthen its resolve and focus on comprehensive strategies, Iran is setting an example in the global fight against drugs. The dedication of its anti-narcotics forces and the support of the community will be crucial in ensuring a safer and drug-free future for everyone.
