UN Tourism Chief Backs Iran’s Ambitious International Investment Guide Initiative
The recent praise from the UN Tourism chief highlights Iran’s commitment to enhancing its tourism investment landscape. This recognition comes amid a series of institutional reforms and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable tourism practices in the Islamic Republic.
Zurab Pololikashvili, the secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), communicated his commendations through an official letter addressed to Seyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Minister. The letter, released by the ministry on Tuesday, emphasizes Iran’s commitment to transforming its tourism sector.
In his correspondence, Pololikashvili acknowledged Iran’s recent “transformative approaches” and “strategic initiatives.” He expressed gratitude for the comprehensive report provided by Iran detailing structural reforms, investment incentives, and new policy actions, which reflects the country’s dedication to enhancing its tourism infrastructure.
Additionally, Pololikashvili offered his congratulations to Iran on the first anniversary of its 14th government, noting the ongoing efforts to position tourism as a crucial component of the nation’s economic growth. He highlighted several key reforms, including:
- Establishment of a dedicated investment and economic affairs center.
- Creation of a center for international affairs and public diplomacy within the ministry.
- Implementation of an investment incentives package for tourism.
These measures are designed to enhance institutional capacity, thereby contributing to more effective management of the tourism sector. Pololikashvili also praised Iran’s tax exemptions for tourism facilities and customs duty waivers, stating that these initiatives could significantly improve competitiveness, boost investor confidence, and foster sustainable growth.
In response to Iran’s request for technical support, Pololikashvili confirmed that UN Tourism is fully prepared to assist in creating a “doing business and investment guide” specifically for tourism in Iran. This guide is anticipated to serve as an international benchmark that will support the ministry’s investment strategy.
Furthermore, the UNWTO is currently reviewing its internal programs to prioritize the Iranian initiative, with a draft cooperation agreement outlining the project’s technical scope, timeline, and budget requirements expected to be shared with Iranian officials soon.
In closing, Pololikashvili expressed optimism regarding the potential for expanded bilateral engagement. He conveyed that UN Tourism looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with Tehran, aiming to enhance the promotion of Iran’s tourism investment opportunities on a global scale.
According to data compiled by the Iranian ministry, the country generated approximately $7.4 billion from foreign tourism in the last Iranian calendar year, which ended in March 2025. During this period, Iran welcomed more than 7 million international visitors.
The Islamic Republic is poised to capitalize on its rich array of tourist attractions, which include:
- Bazaars
- Museums
- Mosques
- Bridges
- Bathhouses
- Madrasas
- Mausoleums
- Churches
- Towers
- Mansions
Among these, there are 29 sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, further enhancing Iran’s appeal as a prime destination for cultural and historical tourism.
With these developments, Iran is set on a path to not only boost its tourism economy but also to establish itself as a prominent player in the global tourism market. The support from UN Tourism signifies a strong endorsement of Iran’s efforts and a commitment to fostering sustainable tourism growth in the region.
