UN Sanctions Fail to Significantly Impact Iran’s Economy: What It Means for the Future

In a recent interview with Mehr News Agency, Iranian lawmaker Bijan Nobaveh Vatan addressed the implications of the snapback mechanism, emphasizing that its activation will have limited effects on Iran, particularly concerning the economy. While some may perceive this move as a significant threat, Vatan argues that it primarily creates a negative psychological atmosphere rather than tangible consequences.

Vatan highlighted the importance of the snapback mechanism within the framework of international law. He stated, “The snapback mechanism is a very important legal issue. If it were applied in its proper place, based on the initial regulations of the United Nations and Resolution 2231, and if Iran had failed to fulfill its commitments, there could have been grounds for its reinstatement.” However, he insists that all legal evidence suggests Iran has not only met its obligations but exceeded them.

He pointed out the withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a pivotal moment. Vatan remarked, “The United States withdrew from the JCPOA, and the European parties to the deal did not implement any of their commitments. They failed to deliver on their promises, and now, by abusing the snapback mechanism, they intend to act against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

According to Vatan, the real threats stem from the unilateral and irrational sanctions imposed by the United States and its European allies. He stressed that these sanctions have more severe economic impacts than the activation of the snapback mechanism, stating, “The threats and negative consequences of the current unilateral and irrational sanctions by the US and European countries against Iran in various economic and banking fields are far greater than the effects that the activation of the snapback mechanism would have on the country’s economy.”

Furthermore, Vatan emphasized that the snapback mechanism’s activation will not significantly affect Iran’s economic landscape. He noted, “The activation of the snapback mechanism will practically have no significant impact on our country, especially in the economic field, other than creating a negative psychological effect.” He also mentioned that Iran possesses strong leverage in this situation.

In his remarks, Vatan pointed out the support from permanent members of the UN Security Council, namely Russia and China, who have publicly stated that the snapback mechanism lacks a legal basis. He asserted, “Just as permanent members of the UN Security Council such as Russia and China have explicitly declared, the activation of the snapback mechanism has no legal basis.”

Vatan also criticized the historical actions of European nations toward Iran. He stated, “The three European countries—France, Germany, and the UK—have a disgraceful and undesirable history in their interactions with Iran. These countries were involved in colonial practices, including supplying chemical weapons to the Ba’athist regime of Iraq.” He added that the Iranian populace is acutely aware of these historical grievances and remains vigilant against such actions, asserting that they will not be easily forgotten.

In conclusion, Vatan expressed confidence in Iran’s resilience, stating, “The Iranian nation has overcome much tougher and more complicated challenges and will overcome this one as well.” He warned that it would ultimately be the European countries whose economic relations and exports suffer due to their anti-Iranian measures, reinforcing the notion that Iran will navigate this challenge successfully.

In summary, the activation of the snapback mechanism may create a tense atmosphere, but according to Bijan Nobaveh Vatan, its practical implications for Iran’s economy are minimal. The focus remains on the historical context of relations with Western nations and the determination of the Iranian people to overcome adversity.
