Truce in Tatters: Israel’s Civilian Casualties in Gaza Raise Alarms
In a troubling turn of events, the Israeli occupation regime has reportedly killed Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, despite the existence of a ceasefire agreement. The ongoing violence raises significant concerns regarding the adherence to ceasefire terms and the humanitarian situation in the region.
On Tuesday, Israeli occupation forces took the lives of at least nine Palestinian civilians in the Shujaiya neighborhood, located in northern Gaza, as well as in the vicinity of the southern city of Rafah. This action constitutes a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement established with Hamas. Additionally, an Israeli drone dropped explosives east of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, leading to further injuries among the local population.
The situation escalated further with reports indicating that the Israeli army arrested 15 individuals in the town of Nassr, northeast of Rafah. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem condemned these actions, emphasizing that the occupation regime is blatantly violating the ceasefire agreement and continuing to target civilians across the Gaza Strip.
Qassem reiterated that Hamas is closely monitoring the ceasefire’s implementation, particularly concerning the handover of the bodies of captured Israeli soldiers held by its armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades. This monitoring is crucial to ensure accountability and adherence to the agreed-upon terms.
On Monday, the Israeli occupation regime also broke the ceasefire that had been in effect for three days, resulting in the deaths of seven Palestinians and injuries to several others. This escalation occurred despite the fact that on October 10, the Israeli cabinet had approved the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which called for an immediate and complete halt to fighting and the exchange of prisoners.
As part of the first phase of this deal, the Palestinian resistance in Gaza successfully handed over 20 captives alive to International Red Cross teams on October 13. In exchange, the Israeli regime released nearly 2,000 Palestinian hostages on the same day as part of the agreement.
On October 15, Hamas announced that it had delivered the bodies of four captives and is anticipated to hand over more in the coming hours and days, as indicated by diplomatic and informed sources. This exchange is a critical step in the ongoing negotiations and aims to foster a sense of trust between the conflicting parties.
Compounding the issues, the regime’s officials have declared the closure of the Rafah crossing, which is essential for delivering much-needed humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian territory. This closure contradicts the commitments made to Hamas, which included a pledge for humanitarian aid to surge to at least 600 trucks per day.
Footage from Tuesday depicted a long line of trucks waiting on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, hindered from entering by the occupation regime. The director general of Gaza’s Government Media Office has urgently called on the Israeli regime to open the crossings and facilitate the immediate entry of aid into the enclave.
- “The suffering faced by the people of Gaza over the past two years will continue after the war ends,” said the director general.
- He emphasized that priority for travel when the crossing opens will be given to the sick and wounded.
- There are currently a quarter of a million tons of waste in the Gaza Strip, constituting an environmental disaster.
- He stated, “We need heavy machinery to deal with the waste, as the war has destroyed many machines.”
The occupation regime has cited the slow release of deceased captives as a reason for the low number of trucks entering Gaza. U.S. officials and other signatories to the ceasefire deal anticipated delays in the delivery of deceased captives by Hamas. During negotiations leading up to the ceasefire agreement, Hamas informed mediators that the process of locating all deceased captives, many of whom had fallen victim to Israeli airstrikes, would require additional time. This account was even acknowledged by U.S. President Donald Trump.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains watchful, urging both parties to adhere to the ceasefire terms to prevent further loss of life and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
