Transforming Shahroud: The ‘Forest to Desert’ Project Sparks Exciting Tourism Development Opportunities!
The ‘Forest to Desert’ project presents a remarkable opportunity for tourism development in Shahroud county, located in Semnan province. Shahroud Governor Mohammad-Hassan Asafari recently highlighted the potential of this initiative during a meeting with the Head of the Semnan Cultural Heritage Department. The governor emphasized the need for professional tour management and strategic planning to maximize the benefits of this unique tourism venture.
Asafari elaborated on the diverse tourism attractions in Shahroud, which include:
- Reza Abad Desert: Known for its stunning sand dunes, off-road driving opportunities, camel riding, and desert trekking.
- Chah Jam Route: Offers picturesque landscapes and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the area.
- Hyrcanian World Heritage Site: Located in the Abr region, this site is recognized for its ecological significance.
- Mojen Waterfall: A stunning natural feature that draws visitors to the region.
- Qale Bala Tourist Village: An emerging attraction that showcases local culture and heritage.
These attractions not only promote tourism but also enhance the handicrafts and cultural heritage of Shahroud. Asafari noted, “Every week, a tourism festival is held in the villages of Shahroud county, from the Felt Festival to the Golden Raven Festival and local rituals, reflecting the cultural richness and high potential of the region.”
He further emphasized the importance of cultural heritage as the essence of local identity, stating, “There are monuments in Shahroud that are nationally and even internationally recognized, such as the Bayazid Bastami Collection, and it is our duty to protect this cultural heritage.”
Shahroud has a significant share of the unique capacities in cultural heritage, tourism, and handicrafts within Semnan province. The governor highlighted the commitment of the Shahroud governor’s office and administrative bodies to:
- Restore historical monuments
- Develop tourism infrastructure
- Support the growth of handicrafts
These efforts are aimed at fostering interaction and cooperation among various stakeholders in the region. Jalal Tajik, the Head of the Semnan Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, praised the proactive approach of Shahroud’s Governor, recognizing his dedication to enhancing cultural heritage and tourism initiatives.
Tajik announced that the inscription of Qale Bala tourist village on the UNESCO World Heritage list is a top priority for the department, which will significantly elevate the village’s profile and attract more visitors.
Additionally, Semnan Governor Mehdi Samimian revealed plans for a special Yalda Night program, a handicraft exhibition, and the restoration of the historic Shah Abbasi Caravanserai. He also mentioned the upcoming millennium festival of the minaret of the Jame’ Mosque of Semnan, which promises to be a grand celebration.
Samimian stressed the importance of bolstering the administrative staff of Semnan to ensure the successful implementation of these programs. “Increasing the capacity of human resources in related areas should be prioritized so that the administrative and supportive processes can proceed more quickly,” he stated.
Moreover, the handicrafts and souvenirs exhibition is slated to take place in Semnan county from December 8 to 16. This exhibition serves as an excellent opportunity to showcase Semnan’s artistic and cultural capabilities to a wider audience.
In the context of religious tourism, Mohammad Bahrami, a member of the board of trustees of Imamzadeh Yahya (AS) shrine, highlighted its significance. He remarked that religious tourism is among the most active and frequently visited types of tourism in Iran, and Semnan province should capitalize on the annual influx of over 20 million pilgrims traveling along the Semnan-Mashhad route.
Bahrami pointed out that the Imamzadeh Yahya (AS) shrine possesses valuable religious tourism potential, making it a significant destination for pilgrims along the Mashhad route. He added, “Semnan province is strategically located on the pilgrimage route connecting Imam Reza (AS) and Hazrat Masoumeh (SA), creating a unique advantage for the development of religious tourism.”
According to Bahrami, the Imamzadeh Yahya (AS) shrine has the potential to emerge as the fourth primary pilgrimage center in Iran, following the shrines of Imam Reza (AS), Hazrat Masoumeh (SA), and Shah Cheragh (AS). This potential is attributed to its historical significance, spiritual status, and favorable location in the heart of Semnan’s historical context.
He also noted that the shrine’s proximity to the Imam Mosque, Jameh Mosque, the historical bazaar of Semnan, and other significant buildings offers a unique advantage for attracting both pilgrims and religious tourists.
