Tehran Art Fair ‘Open Paper’ Launches: A Showcase of Creativity and Innovation

The first edition of the Tehran Art Fair, titled “Open Paper,” has officially begun at the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (Kanoon). This innovative event marks the inaugural paper-based art fair in the MENA region, showcasing the vibrant role of paper in contemporary art. Organized by the Tehran Gallery Owners Association in coordination with the Visual Arts Office of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, this fair is an essential platform for artists and galleries alike.

During his visit to the fair, Acting Deputy Minister of Arts Mohammad-Mehdi Ahmadi underscored the critical role that paper plays in the visual arts. He emphasized how this medium not only enhances public awareness but also supports the economic cycle tied to the sale of paper-based artworks. The fair aims to elevate the perception of paper as a significant artistic phenomenon.

Participating in “Open Paper” are over 40 galleries from Tehran and various other cities. Notable organizations including the Iranian Illustrators Society and the Iranian Graphic Designers Society, along with numerous publishers and studios focused on paper-based arts, are also taking part in this groundbreaking event.

“Open Paper” showcases an impressive array of artistic expressions, including:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Illustration
  • Graphic design
  • Collage
  • Art books
  • Papier-mâché sculptures
  • Paper-based installations

Beyond its artistic and historical relevance, the fair’s emphasis on paper reflects important economic and environmental considerations. Paper-based artworks generally have:

  • Lower production costs
  • Easier transportation
  • More reasonable pricing

These factors facilitate a broader audience’s entry into the art market, particularly under challenging economic conditions. Furthermore, the lightweight and low-consumption nature of these works aligns perfectly with global sustainability standards in the art world.

In addition to the exhibition, “Open Paper” features a variety of specialized discussions and workshops. Topics include:

  • Art economics
  • Paper-based techniques
  • Archiving and conservation
  • Career development for artists

This educational and research-oriented aspect transforms the Tehran Art Fair from merely a sales event into a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange and professional dialogue among artists and art enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, the Tehran Art Fair is set to be an annual event with multiple episodes, coordinated by the Visual Arts Office. “Open Paper” serves as its inaugural step, aiming to establish a standard, accessible, and sustainable model for Iran’s art market. This initiative seeks to lay the groundwork for the institutionalization of the visual arts in the country.

The fair will be open to the public until December 12 at the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (Kanoon), located on Hejab St., Fatemi St. This event promises to be a significant milestone in promoting paper as an essential medium in the art world.
