Tehran and Brasilia Forge New Pathways to Enhance Science and Technology Collaboration

The recent discussions between Iran and Brazil underline the importance of international collaboration in science and technology. During a significant meeting held in Tehran, Sajjad Ahadzadeh, the head of the Center for Progress and Development of Iran (CPDI), and André Veras Guimarães, the Brazilian ambassador to Tehran, explored various opportunities for enhancing cooperation in these vital sectors.

Guimarães emphasized the strategic significance of the BRICS alliance, which includes both countries, as a platform for fostering regional cooperation and reinforcing multilateralism. He stated, “BRICS, representing over half of the world’s population and 40 percent of global GDP, holds a significant potential to improve economic, political, as well as scientific and technological structures at the global level.” This highlights the importance of BRICS in addressing global issues through collaborative efforts.

The ambassador also stressed the need to expand trade relations and deepen mutual cultural understanding. This, he argued, would be essential in promoting collaborative initiatives between Iran and Brazil.

Ahadzadeh responded by acknowledging the long-standing relationship between the two nations, which spans over 120 years. He pointed out the importance of enhancing both bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and innovation that have been actively pursued since 2009.

During their discussions, both officials agreed on several key areas for cooperation, including:

  • Agriculture and food security
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Quantum technology and digital economy
  • Innovative technologies in tile and ceramic manufacturing with minimal water consumption
  • AI applications in cognitive neuroscience
  • Oil and gas exploration
  • Renewable energies

Additionally, they reached agreements on:

  • Producing ethanol, Brazil’s primary biofuel
  • Manufacturing joint electric vehicles
  • Exploring minerals and developing exploration tools
  • Extracting crude oil in the deep waters of the Caspian Sea
  • Fostering cooperation in the aerospace industry

It is noteworthy that Brazil is set to chair the BRICS group in 2025, which could further enhance its role in fostering international collaboration.

In a related context, representatives from Iranian universities and higher education institutes engaged with the BRICS Expert Council in April 2024 in Tehran. This meeting was pivotal in discussing avenues for expanding scientific cooperation among member states.

During this inaugural meeting focused on scientific research and technological initiatives, Victoria Panova, chair of the council and Vice-Rector of HSE University in Russia, along with Omid Rezaei-Far from Iran’s Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, explored strategies to strengthen scientific and technological ties.

Panova remarked, “Despite cruel sanctions, Iran has achieved many accomplishments in agriculture, biotechnology, technology, and engineering sciences fields.” She further clarified that BRICS is not just an economic grouping; it aims to showcase its vast potential in science and technology.

Highlighting Iran’s capabilities, Panova expressed the country’s readiness to expand scientific cooperation with BRICS member states. Rezaei-Far announced plans to establish working groups aligned with BRICS’s educational activities. These groups will facilitate collaboration between academic members and BRICS to achieve shared goals.

Focusing on Iran’s scientific strengths, Rezaei-Far noted the high capabilities of Iranian universities and science and technology parks. He expressed Iran’s eagerness to participate in BRICS scientific endeavors, particularly skill training courses emphasizing innovation and technology.

The BRICS group, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was established in 2009 and has emerged as a significant player in shaping global economic discussions. The ongoing collaborations between Iran and Brazil within this framework could lead to remarkable advancements in various fields.

As both countries continue to explore new avenues for cooperation, the emphasis on scientific and technological collaboration will likely play a crucial role in addressing global challenges and enhancing regional stability.

In conclusion, the meetings between Iranian and Brazilian officials signify a promising step towards strengthening ties that could yield extensive benefits in science and technology. The potential for collaboration is immense, and as both nations work together, they may pave the way for innovative solutions to some of the most pressing issues faced by their societies.
