Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah: Upholding Ayatollah Khamenei’s Legacy of Resistance and Honor

TEHRAN – The recent martyrdom of Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has sparked widespread mourning and reflection on his substantial contributions to the resistance against Israeli occupation. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, has been vocal in his admiration for Nasrallah, acknowledging his pivotal role in promoting the cause of resistance. Following the tragic event of Nasrallah’s assassination in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on September 27, 2024, Khamenei shared several messages honoring the legacy of this remarkable leader.

Mourning the Martyrdom

In a heartfelt message released after Nasrallah’s death, Ayatollah Khamenei called for five days of mourning. He declared, “Resistance forces will be dealing heavier blows to the Zionist regime in the future.” Khamenei described Nasrallah as:

  • A “great fighter”
  • The “bearer of the Resistance in the region”
  • A “religious scholar”
  • A “wise political leader”

He emphasized Nasrallah’s unwavering dedication to defending Lebanon against Israeli aggressions and supporting the oppressed Palestinian population. Khamenei referred to Nasrallah’s martyrdom as a “blessing” that resulted from a lifetime of relentless struggle.

Highlighting the enduring impact of Nasrallah’s leadership, Ayatollah Khamenei stated that the foundations he established in Lebanon will continue to flourish, strengthened by the blood of martyrs. Addressing the Zionist regime directly, he asserted that their violent actions “had not achieved victory,” reiterating that Nasrallah symbolizes a path and ideology that would persist. He emphasized that the Resistance Front will continue to strike decisive blows against the weakened and faltering structure of the Zionist regime.

Reflecting on the broader implications of Nasrallah’s martyrdom, Khamenei remarked, “The loss of Nasrallah is a profound loss for the Muslim world, the Resistance Front, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.” He assured that the blessings of Nasrallah’s wisdom and jihad over the decades would not fade away with his passing.

Commemorating Nasrallah’s Influence

During Friday prayers in central Tehran in early October 2024, Ayatollah Khamenei eloquently stated, “Nasrallah’s true personality, his soul, his path, and his expressive voice are still among us and will be with us forever.” He praised Nasrallah’s “eloquent voice and brave defense of the oppressed,” noting that his influence transcended Lebanon, Iran, and the Arab world.

Later in October, Khamenei emphasized that the efforts of regional resistance leaders, including Nasrallah, “served to change the fate of the West Asia region.” On November 7, during a meeting with the Assembly of Experts, he further remarked:

“The late Nasrallah and the other dear martyrs … have truly and genuinely brought honor to Islam. They have also brought honor to the Resistance Front and increased its power and ability.”

Khamenei acknowledged that Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had ascended to the ranks of martyrs, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration. He credited Nasrallah with transforming Hezbollah into a formidable force that the enemy could not overcome, stating, “Hezbollah grew thanks to Sayyed’s courage, wisdom, patience, and extraordinary trust in God.”

Funeral and Burial Ceremonies

On February 21, 2025, during the funeral and burial ceremonies for Nasrallah and Sayyed Hashem Safieddine, Ayatollah Khamenei issued a profound message:

“The great mujahid and leading commander of the Resistance in the region, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah (may God elevate his status), is now at a position that is the height of honor. His pure body will be laid to rest in the land of jihad for the sake of God, but his spirit and his path will shine more gloriously each day, God willing.”

Khamenei urged that the fight against oppression and usurpation would continue until ultimate victory is achieved. He also paid tribute to Sayyed Hashem Safieddine, praising him as a shining star in the history of the region and a vital part of the Resistance leadership in Lebanon.

Championing the Cause

Even prior to Nasrallah’s martyrdom, Ayatollah Khamenei had consistently praised his leadership. For instance, on August 16, 2006, following Hezbollah’s victory in the 33-day war, Khamenei declared:

“The victory of the Lebanese Islamic Resistance is the victory of Islam, a victory which brought honor to Arab nations and broke the feigned formidableness of the Zionist regime’s army.”

After Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, Nasrallah’s visit to Tehran highlighted the solidarity and appreciation between Iran’s leadership and Hezbollah. Khamenei commended Nasrallah for the success of the resistance movement that compelled Israeli forces to retreat after nearly two decades of occupation.

Throughout the 1990s, Nasrallah made several visits to Iran, where Khamenei recognized his leadership and political achievements, stressing the importance of supporting Hezbollah’s resistance efforts. Ayatollah Khamenei has consistently highlighted Nasrallah’s courage, wisdom, and dedication to the oppressed. He regarded Nasrallah not only as a military and political figure but also as a symbol of the Resistance and a beacon of hope for the Muslim world. Through Nasrallah, Khamenei affirmed the sustained strength of Hezbollah and the Resistance Front against their adversaries.
