Oman Strengthens Ties with Iran to Combat Narcotics Trafficking

In a significant move towards enhancing international collaboration in drug enforcement, Mohammed bin Saleh Al Gheilani, the General Director of Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of Oman, has proposed signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in the fight against drugs and narcotics, highlighting the longstanding and amicable relations between the two nations.

During a recent meeting in Tehran with Iraj Kakavand, Iran’s anti-narcotics police chief, Al Gheilani expressed optimism about leveraging Iran’s expertise in anti-narcotics operations. He stated, “We are optimistic to boost bilateral interactions and cooperation in the targeted fight against drug trafficking,” as reported by ILNA.

Kakavand echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of enhancing regional and global cooperation in the ongoing battle against drugs. “Based on the shared global responsibility, Iran has always prioritized the fight against illicit drugs and drug trafficking,” he noted.

He also highlighted Iran’s capabilities in anti-narcotics efforts, mentioning significant developments in various areas, including:

  • Training Drug-Detecting Dogs: Iran has made notable advancements in training canines for drug detection.
  • Specialized Drug Testing Laboratories: The establishment and development of laboratories dedicated to drug testing.

Kakavand further announced Iran’s readiness to enhance cooperation and share valuable experiences with Oman’s anti-narcotics police.

Importance of Regional Cooperation

The call for enhanced cooperation comes at a time when the region is facing escalating challenges related to drug trafficking. In July 2024, former Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi attended the second International Conference on Drug Control in Baghdad, Iraq, where he engaged with counterparts from various countries to explore collaborative strategies in combating drug trafficking.

Iran’s Dedication to Fighting Drug Trafficking

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has recognized Iran’s significant efforts in combating drug trafficking. On December 8, 2024, Alexander Fedulov, the UNODC Iran Country Representative, attended a crucial meeting at the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ) to commemorate the successful seizure of 2,400 kilograms of methamphetamine in Sistan–Baluchestan Province.

During this meeting, Brigadier General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi, Commander of the Iranian Border Guard, provided details regarding this major operation. The seizure, which took place on September 10, 2024, showcased the relentless commitment of Iran’s border forces against drug production and trafficking, especially concerning drugs originating from Afghanistan.

Brigadier General Goudarzi pointed out that this operation reflects the increasing challenges associated with methamphetamine production in the region. He commended the dedication of Iran’s border guards, law enforcement, and customs officials in tackling these pressing issues.

Fedulov expressed gratitude towards Iranian authorities for their vital contributions in addressing the global challenge of drug trafficking. He emphasized the necessity for strengthened regional cooperation and highlighted the need for increased international support to enhance collective efforts against drug trafficking across West Asia.

According to the UNODC Country Representative, the success of this operation will be presented to the international community as a testament to Iran’s unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and its resolve to ensure regional security.
