New Commission Launched to Boost Expat Engagement in Iran’s Tourism and Cultural Heritage

In a significant move to boost tourism and promote the study of Iranology, Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts has unveiled a new commission aimed at engaging the Iranian diaspora. This initiative is set to enhance the visibility of Iran’s rich cultural, economic, and scientific landscape on a global scale.

The commission operates under the oversight of the High Council of Iranian Affairs Abroad, focusing on identifying experts and influential figures in the tourism sector. Deputy Tourism Minister Anoushiravan Mohseni-Bandpei shared insights on this initiative during a recent announcement, emphasizing its importance for the country.

“One priority of the commission is the active participation of expatriate Iranians in organizing exhibitions and international events to introduce Iran’s tourist attractions and capacities to the world,” he stated. This objective underscores the commitment to not only promote tourism but also foster a deeper connection between Iranians living abroad and their homeland.

Moreover, Mohseni-Bandpei highlighted the initiative’s role in helping younger generations reconnect with their heritage. By providing opportunities to experience Iran’s vibrant culture, the commission aims to strengthen ties with the diaspora.

In addition to international outreach, the ministry is also focused on enhancing domestic tourism. Mohseni-Bandpei noted that over 400 events and festivals have been organized across various regions, including:

  • Isfahan
  • Shiraz
  • Mashhad
  • Northern provinces

These initiatives have resulted in a significant increase in domestic tourism demand and satisfaction among tourists and stakeholders in the hotel industry.

On the topic of medical tourism, Mohseni-Bandpei stated that Iran is establishing itself as a reliable destination in this sector. A newly developed system has been introduced to register services, standards, and prices accurately, thereby enhancing patient trust and improving the overall quality of medical services. This optimization is crucial for leveraging Iran’s potential in both health and tourism sectors.

He further elaborated on the commission’s ultimate objective, which is to harness the tourism and Iranology potentials of the country through the active engagement of Iranians abroad. This strategy aims to ensure sustainable tourism development, both nationally and internationally.

Earlier this year, in July, Seyyed Zia Hashemi, Cultural Deputy to the First Vice President of Iran, mentioned ongoing efforts by the government and parliament to simplify travel procedures for millions of Iranians living abroad. This initiative aims to facilitate their visits to their homeland, promoting greater cultural exchange and tourism.

Recent data reveals that approximately 7.3 million foreign tourists visited the Islamic Republic during the past Persian year, which concluded on March 20, 2025. According to Mohseni-Bandpei, this figure aligns with internationally recognized tourism definitions, categorizing anyone who stays at least one night in a destination as a traveler—this includes both Iranian expatriates and foreign nationals.

The Islamic Republic is poised to benefit significantly from its diverse array of tourist attractions, which encompass:

  • Bazaars
  • Museums
  • Mosques
  • Bridges
  • Bathhouses
  • Madrasas
  • Mausoleums
  • Churches
  • Towers
  • Mansions

Of these, 29 sites have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, further enhancing their appeal to global travelers.

The establishment of this new commission signifies a proactive approach by Iran to foster tourism and cultural exchange, highlighting the nation’s commitment to promoting its rich heritage and diverse attractions on an international level. By engaging the Iranian diaspora, the country hopes to create a more robust tourism framework that benefits both locals and visitors alike.
