Major Drug Bust: Police Confiscate Over 11 Tons of Narcotics in Southeast Region Since March

In the ongoing battle against narcotics, the Iranian anti-narcotics police have made significant strides, seizing a staggering 11.859 tons of narcotics in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan since the start of the current Iranian year on March 21. This impressive crackdown is part of Iran’s extensive efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure public safety.

According to Ahmad Ali Goudarzi, the commander of border guards, various types of illicit drugs have been confiscated during this period, including:

  • Opium
  • Methamphetamine
  • Heroin
  • Hashish

Additionally, the police have arrested 253 drug dealers and reported the unfortunate deaths of eleven individuals during these operations.

Honoring National Heroes

Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaqari, the secretary general of the Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ), emphasized the heroism of martyrs and war veterans in the fight against narcotics. These individuals have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety and security of the Iranian people. Zolfaqari stated, “Thanks to their efforts, the anti-narcotics police are capable of taking more effective national and international measures in the fight against drugs.”

He made these remarks in June, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, which is observed annually on June 26. This day serves to honor those who have fought valiantly against drug trafficking and to highlight the continuing challenges in this crucial area.

Iran’s Role in Global Drug Combat

Zolfaqari also outlined Iran’s pivotal role in the global struggle against drug trafficking. Due to its geographical proximity to Afghanistan, Iran faces numerous challenges regarding drug smuggling. However, he noted that counter-narcotics and security forces have conducted extensive operations over the years to dismantle smuggling networks.

He further mentioned that the martyrdom of 3,800 individuals and the injuries sustained by 12,000 others underline the nation’s unwavering commitment to combat narcotics and drug-related crimes. This illustrates the profound impact and sacrifice made by those involved in this vital fight.

Comprehensive Measures Against Drug Abuse

The DCHQ, in collaboration with both governmental and non-governmental organizations, has initiated various programs aimed at combating drug abuse. Key measures include:

  • Implementing preventive programs
  • Supporting individuals struggling with addiction
  • Developing treatment centers

This year’s World Drug Day campaign focused on the theme “Break the cycle. Stop Organized Crime,” which stresses the importance of coordinated long-term action to dismantle organized crime and drug trafficking. The campaign advocates for addressing the root causes of these issues and investing in vital sectors such as:

  1. Prevention
  2. Justice
  3. Education
  4. Health care
  5. Alternative livelihoods

These elements are considered the building blocks of sustainable resilience in communities affected by drug abuse and trafficking.

As Iran continues to face challenges in the fight against narcotics, the dedication of its anti-narcotics police and allied forces remains a beacon of hope in achieving a drug-free society. The nation’s commitment to this cause not only serves its own citizens but also contributes to global efforts against drug trafficking.

In conclusion, the ongoing efforts by Iranian authorities to combat drug trafficking and support those affected by addiction showcase a multi-faceted approach that combines enforcement, prevention, and treatment. With the backing of dedicated personnel and international cooperation, Iran aspires to pave the way for a safer, drug-free future.
