Join the Fight: National Campaign Launched to Combat Cancer!

TEHRAN – A nationwide initiative aimed at combating cancer is currently taking place from January 20 to 26 throughout the country. This weeklong event is themed ‘hand in hand, prevent and fight against cancer,’ as reported by the health ministry’s website. Cancer remains one of the significant global health challenges, affecting countless lives each year, and this campaign seeks to address its impact.

Cancer is a leading cause of premature mortality in Iran, with the health ministry indicating that it contributes to over 55,000 deaths annually. Among these, approximately 34,000 deaths occur among individuals under 70 years, and about 11,000 deaths arise in those under 50. The latest cancer census projects that the number of new cancer cases in Iran will rise to 160,000 by the Iranian calendar year 1404 (March 2025 – March 2026), reflecting a concerning increase of 43 percent.

  • Breast cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Colon cancer

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Esophageal cancer

Currently, around 250,000 Iranians are living with cancer. It is vital to note that nearly half of all cancers can be effectively treated, and many can be prevented altogether.

Objectives of the National Campaign

This national campaign emphasizes the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment of cancer. Its primary goals include:

  1. Raising public awareness about cancer and its risk factors.
  2. Encouraging early detection and treatment.
  3. Providing support for cancer patients.

To achieve these objectives, the campaign will focus on educating the public on:

  • Ways to prevent cancer through a healthy lifestyle.
  • Recognizing symptoms and understanding the importance of early diagnosis.

Additionally, the campaign aims to change misconceptions surrounding cancer, such as the notion that cancer is untreatable, and to promote regular screenings for breast and colon cancers. Strengthening inter-departmental coordination for cancer prevention and treatment is another crucial goal.

World Cancer Day and Its Significance

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, aims to raise awareness about cancer, advocate for its prevention, and mobilize action against the global cancer epidemic. This initiative is coordinated by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and was established in 2000 to promote global awareness of cancer and its effects.

The theme for World Cancer Day from 2025 to 2027 is “United by Unique,” emphasizing the need for a people-centered approach to cancer care. This theme focuses on:

  • Placing individuals at the heart of care.
  • Exploring innovative ways to make a difference.
  • Highlighting the importance of personalized care in cancer treatment.

Cancer is more than a medical condition; it involves deeply personal stories filled with grief, pain, healing, and resilience. A people-centered approach to cancer care integrates the unique needs of each individual, fostering compassion and empathy for better health outcomes.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Every cancer experience is distinct, and it requires a collective effort to foster a world where we prioritize the person before the patient. This campaign will delve into various dimensions of people-centered cancer care and explore new methods to promote awareness and actionable steps.

In conclusion, the national campaign is a crucial step in raising awareness about cancer prevention and treatment in Iran. By advocating for early detection, addressing misconceptions, and fostering a supportive health system, it aims to make a significant impact on the fight against cancer.

  • Discover How Nature Can Alleviate Acute Physical Pain, According to New Study

A groundbreaking study by neuroscientists at the University of Vienna reveals that viewing natural scenes, whether real or virtual, significantly reduces physical pain intensity. Conducted with an international team, the research explored how nature exposure alters the brain’s pain perception. Participants experiencing pain were shown videos of serene nature, indoor, and urban scenes. Unlike placebos, which mainly affect emotional responses, nature viewing directly influences sensory pain signals. The findings suggest that integrating nature into therapeutic settings, such as hospitals and outdoor therapy sessions, could enhance pain management, offering innovative, nature-based treatment options for chronic pain relief.
