The 42nd Tehran International Short Film Festival (TISFF) is set to commence this Sunday at the Iran Mall Cineplex in Tehran, showcasing an impressive lineup of 95 films from 53 different countries. This year’s festival theme, “Rationality and Intellectualism,” is curated under the leadership of filmmaker Behrooz Shoaibi, promising a rich exploration of diverse cinematic expressions.
The festival will feature an array of films competing in various categories, including:
- Fiction Short Films: Films from Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Spain, Palestine, Lebanon, Iceland, Chile, Cambodia, Norway, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Mexico, Colombia, and Georgia.
- AI Short Films: Selected works from Iran, China, the U.S., Italy, Argentina, Turkey, and South Korea.
- Documentary Short Films: Contributions from Moldova, Croatia, South Africa, Ecuador, Azerbaijan, Panama, Nepal, and Qatar.
- Animated Short Films: Works from Finland, the UK, Kazakhstan, Russia, Jordan, Portugal, Armenia, Belgium, Estonia, France, Tajikistan, Egypt, the UAE, and Bulgaria.
- Experimental Short Films: Films from Canada, Germany, Japan, Poland, Greece, Denmark, Uzbekistan, and Switzerland.
The Tehran International Short Film Festival is recognized as one of Asia’s most prestigious platforms for short films. It stands out for its commitment to creative excellence, innovation, and the promotion of diverse cinematic voices. Over the years, the TISFF has grown into a vibrant hub for global storytelling, receiving thousands of submissions from filmmakers worldwide, which highlights its unparalleled reputation as a cornerstone for emerging talent and visionary cinematic voices.
To further support budding filmmakers, the TISFF offers free film submissions, ensuring that financial constraints do not impede talented individuals from showcasing their unique visions. Organized by the Iranian Youth Cinema Society (IYCS), a key player in short film production and education, the TISFF is backed by a robust infrastructure that includes 57 branches throughout Iran and a dynamic network of filmmakers and alumni.
The IYCS plays a pivotal role in producing numerous short films each year while providing training to aspiring filmmakers. Many graduates of the IYCS have gained recognition as some of the most celebrated filmmakers in international cinema, underscoring the organization’s profound influence on the global filmmaking landscape.
As an OSCARS®-qualifying festival, the TISFF is celebrated for its innovative spirit while honoring cinematic traditions. This year’s edition continues to showcase its established categories, including fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental films—genres that are central to its commitment to cinematic excellence. The Grand Prize winner will earn eligibility for consideration at the Academy Awards®.
In addition to its traditional categories, this year the festival introduces the AI Competition Program, which emphasizes the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on storytelling and artistic expression. This initiative reflects the TISFF’s forward-thinking vision for the future of filmmaking.
New to this year’s festival is the Emerging Horizons Award, highlighting TISFF’s ongoing dedication to nurturing emerging talent. This award is specifically aimed at first or second short fiction films from filmmakers in the MENA region, providing a platform for fresh and visionary voices from this vibrant area of the world.
