IRCS Delivers Vital Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan: A Lifeline of Hope

The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has taken swift action to assist the quake-hit population in Afghanistan by sending over 100 tons of essential goods. This humanitarian effort aims to provide much-needed relief to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck the region recently.

On August 31, a significant earthquake, measuring over 6.0 in magnitude, struck Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province, near the Pakistan border. The IRCS responded promptly, dispatching a total of 100 tons of relief supplies, which included:

• Clothing
• Rice
• Beans
• Blankets
• Canned food

Of the total shipment, approximately 50 tons were sent via air transport, while 60 tons were delivered overland through the Dogharon border, as reported by IRNA.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Kama district, about 30 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad. The quake struck at 23:47 local time and was felt in several neighboring provinces, including Kunar, Laghman, and Nuristan, as well as in Kabul. Due to its shallow hypocenter, estimated to be only 8 to 10 kilometers below the surface, the earthquake’s impact was significantly heightened, leading to severe consequences for the local population.

In a heartfelt message, Pirhossein Kolivand, the head of the IRCS, expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. He stated, “It is with profound sorrow that we learned about the devastating earthquake that hit Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan, and Laghman in eastern Afghanistan, causing many losses of life and injuries. The Iranian Red Crescent Society offers sincere condolences to you and the family of the victims. We stand by the people of Afghanistan, and we are ready to dispatch humanitarian aid as well as relief teams in case needed.” This message was directed to Shahabuddin Delawa, the president of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS).

In addition to the IRCS, President Masoud Pezeshkian responded to the tragedy by extending his sympathies to the “friendly and brotherly” nation of Afghanistan. He expressed his wish for a swift recovery for those injured in the disaster.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also conveyed his condolences to the Afghan people and the families of the victims. He emphasized Iran’s readiness to send relief and medical teams to the areas impacted by the earthquake. Furthermore, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei reinforced this commitment, stating that Iran stands prepared to support the treatment of the injured and to collaborate with Afghanistan through regional and joint efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by this catastrophic event.

As of now, the de facto authorities in Afghanistan have reported alarming statistics regarding the earthquake’s impact. Approximately 2,205 people have been confirmed dead, while 3,640 individuals have sustained injuries. The disaster has affected around 84,000 people, with 6,700 homes reported destroyed, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

In a further escalation of the situation, a second earthquake measuring 5.5 in magnitude struck the region on September 1, compounding the challenges faced by the already devastated villages.

The IRCS and the Iranian government remain steadfast in their commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by this natural disaster. Their efforts highlight the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.
