IRCS and ICRC Emphasize Urgent Humanitarian Relief Efforts in Gaza

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has sparked urgent discussions among international organizations. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have stressed the importance of facilitating the unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance to those in desperate need. As the situation deteriorates, the call for immediate action becomes more pressing.

The head of the IRCS, Pirhossein Kolivand, recently participated in an online meeting with Nicolas Von Arx, the Near and Middle East regional director for the ICRC. During this meeting, they highlighted the necessity of enhancing global cooperation to expedite humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. According to the IRCS website, both officials emphasized the critical need to:

  • Rebuild medical centers
  • Provide medical and psychological support for vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly

Kolivand referenced an ICRC report detailing the dire conditions in Gaza, which he described as both difficult and heartbreaking. The report reveals that:

  • Over two million people have been displaced and are in urgent need of food and drinking water
  • Medical infrastructures have been destroyed, leaving 93,000 pregnant women and new mothers without essential healthcare
  • Approximately 25,000 civilians require life-saving medications

These groups must be prioritized in any humanitarian aid efforts. Kolivand urged all nations to collaborate in facilitating the entry of aid and relief teams into Gaza and to assist in the reconstruction of medical facilities.

In response, Arx discussed the ICRC’s efforts, noting that following the October 7 attack, around 60,000 Palestinians have been displaced. He stated, “Our co-workers are still present in Gaza and Rafah, which is commendable. However, we have lost four of our staff members over the past five months.” He elaborated on the challenges faced by field hospitals, revealing that:

  • Israeli forces have targeted hospitals several times a day, even while surgeries were being performed
  • Despite these threats, the ICRC has continued to provide essential services to those affected by the conflict

Arx also highlighted that “an estimated 17,000 people in Gaza are searching for their relatives.” So far, the ICRC has successfully connected about 5,000 individuals with their families. He underscored the importance of promoting adherence to humanitarian law and enhancing protection for civilians in conflict zones. “We strive to prioritize these core issues in discussions between the parties to the conflict,” he added.

In recognition of IRCS’s impartiality in delivering humanitarian aid, Arx praised their commitment to serving the people of Gaza without bias.

Immediate Actions Needed for the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

In July, Kolivand sent a letter to the ICRC president calling for urgent measures to address the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by starvation in Gaza and to halt the torture of civilians. He referenced alarming reports from the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), stating that:

  • Approximately a quarter of Gaza’s population is facing famine
  • Thousands of women and children have succumbed to malnutrition

Moreover, Kolivand reported instances of military forces targeting civilians who were simply waiting in line for food. He characterized these actions as clear violations of humanitarian law and potential war crimes. Furthermore, he indicated that these actions by the Israeli regime may meet the criteria for genocide as defined by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and the 1948 Convention.

In his letter, Kolivand urged the ICRC to leverage all available resources to expand humanitarian diplomacy with responsible institutions, thereby creating pathways for necessary humanitarian assistance to reach the region. The situation in Gaza requires immediate and coordinated international efforts to alleviate the suffering of countless individuals.

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to unfold, it is vital for organizations and nations worldwide to come together and ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
