Iraq Taps into IRCS Expertise: Unlocking New Services for Enhanced Support

In a significant development, the Iraqi deputy minister of interior has expressed the country’s eagerness to collaborate with the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS). This partnership aims to leverage the services, products, and expertise of the IRCS to enhance healthcare and humanitarian efforts in Iraq.

During a three-day visit to the IRCS, led by Salah Al-Obaidi, the Iraqi delegation is exploring the society’s capabilities. This initiative is pivotal for strengthening ties between Iran and Iraq, particularly in the realms of healthcare and emergency services.

“We also look forward to boosting ties in the pharmaceutical, therapeutic, and rehabilitation sectors due to the high capabilities of Iranian experts, the close relationship between the two countries, and their proximity,” Al-Obaidi stated during his meeting with Pirhossein Kolivand, the head of the IRCS.

In his address, Al-Obaidi praised the IRCS for its commendable services during the Arbaeen pilgrimage and its humanitarian endeavors in conflict-stricken regions such as Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. He acknowledged that Iraq is pursuing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to facilitate the treatment of Iraqi patients in Iran; however, this process has faced delays due to the recent escalation of conflict in the region.

Kolivand, in response, expressed the IRCS’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Iraq. He elaborated on the society’s extensive capabilities, noting that the IRCS operates medical centers in 15 countries, including locations in Dubai and Najaf, and across various continents such as Asia, Africa, and South America.

  • Manufacturing Capabilities: The IRCS’s Helal textile companies are renowned for producing essential items such as relief tents, mats, and clothing.
  • Pharmaceutical Production: The society’s pharmaceutical facilities are engaged in manufacturing various medicines, medical equipment, and prostheses (artificial limbs).

In a related development, Kolivand announced in May the IRCS’s readiness to share its scientific, educational, and operational expertise with other Red Crescent societies, aided by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He emphasized the importance of collaboration in the following areas:

  1. Mobility Diagnosis: The IRCS offers screening services for individuals with mobility challenges.
  2. Rehabilitation Services: Providing essential rehabilitation services to those in need.
  3. Mine Hazard Training: Training individuals in mine-affected areas on identification and avoidance of landmines.

These remarks were made during a meeting with Nicolas Von Arx, Director of Operations for North Africa and the Middle East, alongside Vincent Cassard, the ICRC representative in Iran. Kolivand also highlighted the need for the ICRC to organize a congress to honor international rescuers who have sacrificed their lives in humanitarian missions, proposing that the IRCS host this event. He argued that such initiatives would invigorate the motivation of Red Crescent societies globally.

Addressing the challenges posed by unilateral sanctions, Kolivand stated, “We expect the International Committee of the Red Cross to play its role in facilitating the import of medicine and medical equipment by the Iranian Red Crescent Society.” He further called upon the ICRC to enhance the capabilities of Red Crescent helicopters by equipping them with night vision cameras, which would significantly improve their efficiency in rescue operations.

This collaboration between the IRCS and Iraqi authorities is poised to foster a stronger healthcare network, ultimately benefiting those in need across both nations. The focus on shared expertise and resources is a testament to the commitment of both countries toward humanitarian aid and health services enhancement.

With ongoing discussions and collaborations, the IRCS aims to not only support Iraq in its healthcare challenges but also to expand its humanitarian reach across the region. The commitment to mutual support and the sharing of resources is a promising step towards addressing the pressing healthcare needs of the populations in both Iran and Iraq.

As this partnership evolves, it will be crucial to monitor the implementation of the proposed MOU and the actualization of shared goals between the two nations, ensuring that humanitarian efforts continue to thrive amidst regional challenges.
