Iran’s Robotics Team Excels at First Global Challenge: A Showcase of Innovation and Talent
In a remarkable achievement for Iranian students, a three-member team has secured two silver medals at the prestigious First Global Challenge (FGC), an international robotics competition held in Panama from October 29 to November 1. This Olympic-style event draws participants from around the globe, showcasing the innovative capabilities of youth in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges through robotics.
The First Global Challenge is an annual event that invites nations to send teams to design and program robots aimed at solving global issues. This year’s theme, Eco Equilibrium, focused on biodiversity, bringing together participants from 191 countries. The competition emphasized the importance of ecological balance and the innovative technologies that can help protect vulnerable species and restore habitats.
The Iranian team, comprised of Mohammad Montazeri, Mehdi Montazeri, and Saleh Azizi, showcased their project titled ‘PyroGuard’. This innovative system utilizes the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent, detect, and respond to forest fires through real-time analysis of thermal anomalies and environmental data. Key features of their project include:
- Remote-controlled operation
- Smart alert notifications
- Monitoring of soil and vegetation temperature
The Iranian team’s outstanding performance earned them two silver medals for their exemplary work in the categories of New Technology Experience and Courageous Achievement, specifically the Innovator Award and the Rajaa Cherkaoui El Moursli Award. This follows their previous achievements in 2024, where they won a silver medal for Engineering Documentation and a bronze for New Technology.
Awards for Environmental Conservation
In addition to their success at the First Global Challenge, Iran also received significant recognition for its efforts in environmental conservation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) awarded Iran two prestigious honors—Reverse the Red and the International Ranger Awards 2025—during the World Conservation Congress held in Abu Dhabi from October 11 to 15.
The Reverse the Red initiative aims to reverse biodiversity loss by promoting strategic cooperation and action worldwide. The Iranian Ambassador to Abu Dhabi, Reza Ameri, accepted the award on behalf of the nation.
The International Ranger Awards recognized 13 rangers and ranger teams for their exceptional commitment to nature conservation. This award is designed to honor the courage and resilience of rangers, highlighting their achievements and raising public awareness about their crucial roles in protecting ecosystems. Notably, Iran became the first country in West Asia to receive this honor, with the Saidvaa National Park and the Parvar Protected Area Ranger Team in Semnan province being specifically acknowledged for overcoming challenges in conservation efforts.
Representing the rangers, Azin Saeedi accepted the award, showcasing the dedication of Iran’s conservationists. Further emphasizing Iran’s commitment to sustainable practices, Behzad Qiasi, a faculty member at the University of Tehran, won the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Young Scientists Award for his innovative project aimed at developing a sustainable hydrotourism model in Iran’s Miankaleh Biosphere Reserve.
This year’s MAB Young Scientists Awards were presented to 11 young researchers from various countries, including Morocco, China, Congo, the U.S., Brazil, Ghana, and Algeria, recognizing their significant contributions to science and sustainability. The announcement took place during the 37th session of the MAB International Coordinating Council (ICC) in Hangzhou, China, following the fifth global summit of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
These achievements at both the First Global Challenge and the IUCN World Conservation Congress highlight Iran’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability among its youth. With a focus on education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), Iran continues to inspire the next generation of leaders equipped to tackle global challenges.
